Breckenbrough School History - Characters

Sophie

Sophie has cleaned at Breckenbrough School since the late 50's. She was appointed by Frank and Mary Forrest. She was then full-time, now she only works part-time. She nevertheless still makes her presence felt and it has been whispered that when the vacuum cleaner starts to misbehave, she ministers to it by 'borrowing' the boys' toothbrushes! She can often be seen wending her way to Sandhutton, bending in the hedgerows, picking herbs. In her early days she used to sing Latvian folk songs as she worked. Her 'command' of the English language has always been somewhat limited but she always made her feelings understood by the clear use of swear words, plus the waving of her brush. As a keen geranium grower, her plants would often appear on the shelves at school and her cottage windows in Sandhutton are always a riot of geranium colour. She always has an apron pocket filled with 'Sophie sweets!'

Connie

Many will always remember Connie who works in the laundry. She came to the school nearly twenty years ago, in 1965. She copes with mountains of socks, underwear, shirts, games kit, etc. of both boys and staff. Always of good voice she sings songs from her army days and also songs of the present as she works. The decibels are staggering, but she has a good voice and it seems she could have possibly been another 'Forces favourite'. Always kind-hearted, she loves lots of fun, but will not stand any nonsense from the boys. Today she sings less, but there is always music from her new cassette recorder resounding round the sewing room.

Where would we be without the faithful few who never appear in minute books but only in memories?

- as recalled by Kelvin Gott (1985)
