Breckenbrough School History - Board of Governors

Over the years of management of the school many outstanding people have given of their time and expertise to ensure the smooth running of the establishment. Some names stand out when reading through the documents, and their words and deeds shine through the dusty pages.

By 1960 Thomas Pickles had served on the Board for a total of nine years, five of them as Chairman, and in 1962 Stanley Farrar's service was noted as being the first Chairman to the school from 1945 to 1947, during which time the move from Dunnow to Ledston took place. He then remained on the Board as a regular member with a keen interest until 1963, a matter of 18 years. In 1962 Sidney K. Benstead retired from many years of loyal service, the last four of them as Chairman. In 1965 it was noted that Hubert Dunning, having been on the Board from 1951, Vice Chaiman from 9156 and Chairman from 1963 would remain until 1966, thus giving 15 years devoted service. He was famous for his reassuring wisdom. Ursula Ford was a Board Member for 16 years, from 1953 to 1969, first at Ledston and then at Breckenbrough. Her wise counsel on all matters domestic was especially noted and her attendance at meeting was regular and valuable and she was sometimes the only lady present. Also in 1969 William Dunning resigned after 12 years and his service is recorded as "a friend to guide and a leader to trust". Sidney K. Brown was Chairman for many years following a Vice Chairmanship, and after him Sidney Best, both of whom gave of their expertise, bringing a great deal of past experience of management into play. After Sidney Best's retirement in 1977, John McKean took the Chair for the following five years. During his office many developments came to fruition all of which had his enlightened interest. Walter Webster's association with the school has continued after his Board membership by his involvement with and interest in the After Care Service.

Special mention must be made of Stephen Cory who has guided the financial affairs of the school through its many vicissitudes as the Honorary Treasurer. His interest and membership of the Board and subsequently his Treasurership date from 1956. In addition to his sterling work on the financial side he has taken a genuine interest and a lasting part in the continuing growth of the After Care Committee, being its recorder for the past few years. Faithful in his attendance at all meetings he is a very real friend to the school and his service continues in these vital areas of work.

Over the years many other Members of the Society of Friends from Yorkshire General Meeting have served the school on the Board. Most of them have been appointed for a period of six years, but some co-opted for longer, for specific projects, and others returning to the Board for a further appointment after a break. The school staff are very grateful for the continuing concerned interest of the many people involved in this way.

The present Chairman, Joyce Pickard, continues in the traditional way to display her informed interest in all the school's activities and we are grateful to her for the foreword to this history.
