Breckenbrough School - Structure

Boys are woken at 7.45am, before breakfast at 8.15am which includes a cooked course, the pupils are expected to wear school uniform, make their beds and leave their rooms tidy.

As with all meals the boys meet in the Great Hall under the supervision of a senior member of staff. When everyone is ready the boys move to the dining room in an orderly manner. In the dining room boys will stand quietly behind their chairs until they are asked to sit. Staff wait until the boys have got their food before taking theirs. Boys take it in turns to serve at their tables.

There is an assembly before school begins each day, conducted by the Head or Deputy Head. This is a time for quiet consideration of the previous twenty four hours and every effort is made to make it positive. Pupils who have achieved merits the previous day are mentioned and any certificates or awards are presented to pupils. There is a period of silence, "a pause for thought" for individual reflection.

School consists of an eight period day with a break of twenty minutes in the morning and an hour for lunch. There is an expectation that all pupils will attend all lessons. If any pupil does not attend a lesson his teacher will immediately contact another member of staff and he is returned as quickly as possible.

Lunch is from 12.45pm to 1.45pm where boys are offered a choice of hot food or a salad bar. At break time and after lunch boys are allowed onto their units, into the indoor play area (Gym) or outside.

School ends at 3.45pm and boys then go up to their units and change out of their school uniform. Most afternoons there is a shopping trip into Thirsk. Pocket money is handed out at 3.45pm on Tuesdays. Pupils who do not wish to go on the shopping trip have free time.

Tea is at 5pm and is the main meal of the day. Before the meal boys are told of any excursions or trips that have been planned and the activities on offer.

At 6pm there is sometimes a meeting to tell pupils about activities being offered that evening. Activities tend to be offered between 6pm and 8pm, however, we do not wish to over-supervise the boys. We invest them with considerable trust and by this means seek to encourage self control and gradual enhancement of their awareness of the needs and feelings of the rest of the community and development of their own interests.

There is always a wide range of both indoor and outdoor activities available to the boys either under direct staff supervision or where the boys are able to organise the activitiy themselves. These include sporting activities such as; football, cricket, tennis, badmington, table tennis, snooker and pool, plus multi-gym facilities, fishing in the school pond or local area plus a number of other sports and games. There are other recreational activities available such as cookery, art and crafts, board games and cards, lego club, motor mechanics, music and computer games. We also arrange trips out to local places of interest, cinemas, etc and the opportunity to join local community organisations such as Army Cadets or sports clubs. Or, a boy may choose to quietly enjoy watching TV/Sky TV or to be in his own room alone or with friends. Not all activities are available at the same time, some require supervision by specialist staff, but for the majority of the time at school there is a varied choice of things to do.

The school now has a motorcycle motocross track built into the grounds with five machines which are suitable for the complete school age range. When the boys reach a set standard they are given the opportunity to race within local clubs.

Boys are offered a small supper between 7.30pm and 8pm. The Juniors are expected to be on their unit from 8pm and shower before their bedtime at 9pm. Year 9 go to bed at 9.30pm, Year 10 at 10pm and Year 11 at 10.15pm. Lights out are 15 minutes later.

The regime is more relaxed at weekends with a later riser and a late bedtime on Saturday night. Activities are arranged according to the interest's of the boys but there is an expectation that these activities are only available on good behaviour.
