Location

The medieval Royal Proclamation City of Viborg is located in the Jutland region of Denmark. Steeped in history, the area has rolling countryside and many woodland areas. Due to the location, the weather can be variable so expect to get cold and wet as well as hot and sweaty!

How to get there

Viborg has a main railway station and there are numerous road links.

What is the Haervejscmarch?

Denmark was one of the founder nations of the IML with this walk, which is taking place for the 30th time in 1998. The walk is organised by a self governing body and is designed for people of all abilities (so it says in the leaflet - see below!) Up to 10,000 walkers take part each year. There is a parade in Viborg stadium on Friday night and as much entertainment can be gained from this in the car park, where the sound of the cannon is guaranteed to set off every car alarm in town!

Distances

Distances covered are either 20, 30, 40 or 45 km a day over one or two days. To receive an IML award you only need to complete the 20 km routes on the two days, although these result in the award of a smaller national medal as it does not qualify for the full award. Participants who complete the obligatory distance, below, receive the Haervejsmarch Medal, Grouse emblem or number for mounting on the ribbon depending on how many times they have taken part.

Obligatory Distances

Start 0500. Finish not later than 1700.

Start 0600. Finish not later than 1700.

There is a family route of 2 x 20 km for all the family and this meets the IML regulations but does not entitle the entrants to a medal. Also, a marathon and a half-marathon take place on the Sunday. For more info on these, call the Secretariat on +45 86 62 58 54.

The routes themselves start and finish at the Viborg Stadium and the routes, although lengthy, are not too strenuous, few hills or other obstacles.

How do I take part?

Accommodation

The walk organisers arrange cheap accommodation in halls and schools throughout Viborg - sleeping bag and pillow essential. There is also plenty of hotel accommodation available. They also allegedly provide food in the Tinghallen but I never did see any of the meals laid out, and not for want of trying. In fact, I was not the only hungry person that weekend. Having said that, I did eat enough junk food on the Saturday to suffer considerably on the Sunday, a problem that I have never had before or, as yet, since. Still, on the Sunday I did find a very nice Chinese restaurant in town that more than made up for the earlier problems.

Military personnel can be accommodated at the nearby barracks. Again, food is difficult to come by but there is a military bar and several barbecues on the go during the evenings. These barracks are literally next to the stadium and so are very handy. Groups are either accommodated in separate barracks or in a large gymnasium - just book in advance.
