Location

Castlebar is located in the northwest region of the Republic of Ireland, close to the border with Northern Ireland.

How to get there

There are plenty of internal links by road or rail. The nearest airport is at Knock and the organisers arrange to pick up visitors on the day before the walk commences.

What are the International Four Days' Walks?

Walking is a popular pastime in Ireland and so it was natural that the country was one of the founding members of the IML. The Castlebar is the only four day event apart from Nijmegen. Unfortunately for some, it also takes place only three weeks before that event so it can be difficult to get to both (that's my excuse for not taking part, anyway!)

Distances

Distances covered are either 30 km cross country routes or 40 km road marches. The off-road routes are actually escorted hikes in groups to prevent anyone getting lost in the bogs, never to be seen again. To receive the IML award, walkers can mix and match these different routes but must do at least one 40 km walk.

Accommodation

Contact the organisers for more details, or check out the site above.

Military personnel should contact the organisers for further details. Note that any British troops MUST contact their own administrative sections first for obvious security reasons. It is a little known fact that it is actually illegal for troops from foreign countries to wear uniform in the Republic of Ireland, although this is not strictly applied for the Castlebar walk.
