CODEX UNDEAD
On a thousand worlds in a hundred systems, cultists raise the spirits of long dead warriors in twisted ritual sacrifice to the dark gods of Chaos. It takes powerful strength of mind for one of the spirits to re-animate a skeletal body, but those that do are extremely dangerous killers with eons of knowledge. Whenever Chaos Space Marines join the Cultists they make sure that some of these undead fiends are taken back, to serve on the battlefields of chaos.

Welcome to Codex: Undead for Warhammer 40,000 Third Edition. This Codex is constantly evolving and has had little testing yet, so if you do try out some of the rules please mail me with some feedback! Whenever I come up with some new ideas or a new conversion is made, I'll detail it here. Latest additions are the Darkwing Gliders and Chaos Spawn, as well as complete reworking of the wargear and rewards and a couple of unit option tweaks.
An Undead Character may take equipment from the Wargear list. A model may take two single-handed weapons or a single-handed weapon and a double-handed weapon. In addition, they may spend up to 100 points on Undead wargear or (in the case of Pskers) Psychic powers.
Single-Handed weapons
Powerfist- 25pts
Power Weapon- 15pts
Lightning Claw (single)- 25pts
Close Combat Weapon- 1pt
Plasma Pistol- 15pts
Double-Handed weapons
Bolter- 2pts
Shotgun- 2pts
Wargear
Chaos Armour- 25pts
Frag Grenades- 1pt
Haywire Grenades-4pts
Krak Grenades- 2pts
Reaper Blade- 5pts
Screaming Stone (Psykers Only)- 20pts
Undead Steed (Independent Characters only)- 5pts

Annihilus (Psychic Power)- 10pts
Daemonic Soul- 20pts
Pestilence Aura- 5pts
Raging Spirit (Psychic power)- 35pts
Spikes- 5pts
Weeping Skull- 5pts
Wings (Independent Characters only)- 10pts
Combat Pistol Range 12", S3, Ap6, Pistol.
Multi-Bolter Range 24", S4, Ap5, Heavy 4.
Frag Launcher Range 24", S3, Ap6, Assault 1 Blast. Frag Launchers are used by darkwings to disrupt enemy units and hinder plans. As such, any unit suffering casualties must make a Barrage Pinning test as if struck by a Mortar or similar- see pg58 of the 3rdEd rulebook for details.
Chaos Armour Heavy Plates of Ceramite and Plasteel Armour are often used by mighty Undead Characters. Though they do not boost their already formidable aura, but instead bulk out the character and absorb much of the impetus of an attack. A model wearing Chaos Armour gains +2Toughness. However, the massive weight means that they may only consolidate after an assault.
Haywire Grenades Like many races, the Undead make use of Haywire grenades when expecting to face considerable armour, as the short-range burst of electro-magnetic interference bypasses the armour to cripple control systems. A model using a Haywire grenade in assault makes only one attack. If he hits, roll a D6- 1=no effect, 2-5=glancing hit, 6=Penetrating Hit. Haywire grenades may only be used against a Dreadnought if it has been immobilised!
Screaming Stone Bound within the Screaming Stone are the tormented souls of captives bound to the crystal in a bloody ritual sacrifice. They gain no nourishment from the barely living Undead yet when they sense living creatures nearby they claw at it's mind in an attempt to claim the body for themselves. As a result, enemy models within 12" suffer -2 to their leadership, increasing to -3 within 6".
Lightning Claw Occasionally an Undead character may obtain a deadly Lightning Claw. This is treated as a power weapon. In addition, the model can re-roll failed to wound rolls. Note that a model may only carry a single lightning claw and does not gain the bonus for an additional close combat weapon.
Reaper Blade A long, Sweeping Reaper Blade is a simple yet lethal weapon, adding 1 to the user's strength and Attacks. This weapon may not be used in conjunction with a Powerfist or Lightning Claw due to the dexterity with which it must be wielded.
Undead Steed A model may ride upon the rotting carcass of an Undead Steed into battle. The model counts as Cavalry.
Annihilus The Annihilus Power causes the nervous system of the victim to be thrown into spasm, limbs snapping and organs being expelled as the body goes through terrible contortions. If the Psychic Test is passed then target a unit as per normal shooting and make a to hit roll as usual. The Victim will take a wound with an AP of 3 on the roll of 2+. If the save is failed, then the model explodes. Place a blast marker on it and roll to hit models underneath as usual- they take a single hit with a Strength equal to the victims' toughness and with an AP equal to their save.
Daemonic Soul A model with this reward has become possessed by a fairly major daemon yet retains much of his already unearthly frame. However, the power invested in him by the Daemon's invigorating strength means that he is treated as a Monstrous Creature, meaning he rolls 2D6 for armour penetration and opposing models may not make saving throws in assault. Note that this modifier only applies when using his bare hands, so the model may only gain the extra attack for 2 weapons if both weapons are close combat weapons (not pistols or powerfists). If a double is rolled for armour penetration then the model takes a single wound unless its save is passed as it is overcome by the energies of the daemon it plays host to.
Pestilence Aura A model with the pestilence aura wounds targets in base contact on a 2+. For non-mortal opponents (Dreadnought, Daemon etc), use the models S instead.
Raging Spirit The Raging Spirit Psychic power drains the very energy of the combatants to power it's awesome attack. If the Psyker stood still then in the shooting phase it may attempt to use this power. If successful, they may fire as if they were armed with a weapon which has the following profile: Range 24", S8, Ap2, Heavy, Blast, Uses Ordinance damage table against vehicles. However, if the test is failed then roll a D6 for each Undead unit, starting with those nearest the Psyker. On a roll of a 6 then D3 members of the squad (you may choose which) are slain as the potent forces of the spell drain away the life essence holding them together. Keep testing until all units have passed or until one has failed.
Spikes Some Undead are gifted with gruesome spikes and horns. These allow the model to re-roll one close combat to hit dice per assault phase.
Weeping SkullThe cavernous sunken eye sockets of the Undead Character's skull weep dreadful tears of fire. So horrifying is this gift that enemy models must pass a Leadership test in each round of combat or else they will only hit the character on sixes.
Wings An Undead character gifted with wings is able to soar gracefully across the battlefield exactly as if they were equipped with a jump pack.
Aura of Undeath Many Undead are protected by fields of warp energy. As such, their 4+ save is Invulnerable. All troops are assumed to have this ability unless noted otherwise.

Plague Zombie 10 3 3 3 4 1 3 1 7 5+

Special Rules:
Aura: Plague Zombies do not get the Aura of Undeath Invulnerable save. However, each model has a Pestilence Aura to represent the deadly plague and contagion they carry and spread.

The undead armies rarely contain Battle Tanks or heavy artillery. As such they require alternative ways to deal with such threats when faced by them on the field of battle. Squad The squad consists of between 3 and 10 Skeletons.
Weapons: Each Infernus Skeleton has a Plasma Pistol.

Spawn 20 3 0 3 5 2 3 D6 6 5+
Not all attempts at reviving Undead spirits are successful, and often they go hideously wrong resulting in the formation of hideous lumps of Chaos Spawn. Unlike the Plague Zombies, who are valued by Undead commanders, These unfortunates are viewed solely as expendible, being used as living shields at the front of the battlefield.
Squad The Squad consists of between 1 and 10 chaos Spawn.
Special Rules:
Cavalry Chaos Spawn count as Cavalry.

It is not just human forms that are reanimated by the worshippers of Chaos.
