Western Dales Holidays by Curlew Guided Walking

The Three Peaks area of the Yorkshire Dales is a region quite unlike any other in Britain. The underlying limestone has been scraped by glaciers and weathered by millennia to form great pavements of bare rock. Stark white outcrops (the scars) gleam through green pastures sprinkled with wild flowers and scented by wild thyme. We can ascend Whernside, the highest mountain in the Dales, with fine waterfalls and a necklace of lonely tarns to linger by. The great table mountain of Ingleborough has several routes to its lofty plateau where the remnants of a Celtic fortress and hut circles can still be found. The limestone foothills are a fascinating landscape of dry valleys, gorges and miles of stone walls that are a characteristic feature of the area. From the charming village of Clapham we can explore the secluded valley of Crummackdale surrounded by crags of bare rock strewn about with dark boulders of slate. On the moors above we pass many deep potholes, their entrances full of flowering plants out of the reach of nibbling sheep. Green tracks take us from the stone cottages of Feizor past mysterious burial cairns and the enigmatic Celtic Wall into Ribblesdale with the two fine waterfalls of Catrigg and Stainforth Forces. You may glimpse a leaping salmon or a dipper bobbing on a mossy stone.

"… many thanks for the week in the West Yorkshire Dales … the weather was good, the scenery was magnificent and the week could not have been better organized." G. Ruddick, Norfolk, UK.

We can walk on the Howgill Fells in the north west corner of the park on smooth, sweeping ridges quite unlike the rest of the Dales and where wild fell ponies are often seen. Highlights here include the great Black Force ravine and the spectacular cascades at Cautley Spout.
