Holidays and short breaks in the North of England

The Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks offer some of the finest walking and hiking in Great Britain. Hadrian's Wall combines centuries of history with fine Northumberland scenery. The Eden Valley is a quiet oasis little-known to all but the most discerning.

Since 1997 we have been providing holidays and short breaks that sample the best that this country can offer. Why not join us in 2009?

Planning your trip

Accommodation
We select our venues carefully - they are all small, family-run and chosen for quality, location and warmth of welcome. They hold VisitBritain (VB) diamond ratings or an equivalent local inspection. Evening meals are available or there will be good alternatives a short walk away. En-suite rooms are the norm with some standard rooms also available at lower rates. Single rooms are available - at some locations without a supplement.

Walks, Groups & Leaders
Each day's walk will be carefully selected by the leader taking into account likely weather and group fitness. You do not need to be experienced but you will need clothing suitable for hill walking, boots and a light daypack. A typical day of around 6 to 7 hours includes stops to appreciate views, interesting features and for breaks. There is often a cosy tea room for an after-walk cup of tea!
Our groups consist of singles, couples and friends arriving from Britain, Europe and further afield with many guests returning for repeat holidays. They are small enough to ensure individual attention.
Our experienced leaders have a detailed knowledge of the landscapes, natural history and history of the area. They know the best routes, where the sights "off the beaten track" are and will provide you with ideas for your non-walking day. For your safety they carry a first aid kit, emergency shelter and mobile phone.

Group Holidays Please contact us if you would like a holiday tailored specifically to your group. Discounts are available at some venues for larger parties.

Holiday Grades     To fully enjoy a walking holiday you do need to be reasonably fit and active. If you have any doubts about which grade is right for you please ask us for advice.
Moderate: include valley walking and lower or less demanding summits. The paths are generally good but can also include rough sections or steep climbs, particularly in the Lake District. Typically: 7 - 10 miles (11 - 16 km) with 500 - 1500 feet (150 - 500m) of ascent.
Moderate Plus: will appeal to more experienced or active guests who wish to tackle the higher hills or walk further. Typically: 12miles (20 km) or over 2000 feet (600m) of ascent with some pathless terrain or rough ground.
