Bailrigg FM
is a fully licensed independent radio station, funded by the Lancaster
University Student Union. We broadcast 24 hours a day in FM stereo
across the campus of Lancaster University on 87.7MHz from purpose-built
studios in Fylde College. The mission of the station is to provide
a news and entertainment service for all students on the University
campus.
Bailrigg FM
was founded in 1971 as University Radio Bailrigg (URB), ahead of
the more general birth of commercial independent radio in the UK.
To the best of our knowledge, URB (and thus Bailrigg FM) was only
the second non-BBC station to ever gain a UK broadcast licence.
Our extensive record library has been growing ever since the birth
of the station and today features around 48,000 pieces, between
7", 12" and CD including many current pre-release items.
A significant
part of our schedule takes the form of live shows from our studio
complex. In other hours, we take a service from the Student
Broadcast Network (SBN), including a number of syndicated shows
including, for instance, the SBN Chart show. News bulletins are
broadcast on the hour, every hour. These are usually sourced from
Independent Radio News (IRN)
although some are specially produced by SBN and feature news of
particular interest to the national student population. Bailrigg
FM is also a member of the Student
Radio Association (SRA) who oversee a number of matters on behalf
of the majority of UK student radio stations.
If you have
any comments, suggestions, requests or wish our help in publicising
a forthcoming event then you can Email us at radio@lancaster.ac.uk,
phone us free on extension 93902 from anywhere on the campus or
visit the station in Fylde College.
