The Identification & Control of Musculoskeletal Risks To Supermarket Checkout Workers

The UK has approximately 220,000 supermarket checkout workers. Research has shown that the despite almost 20 years of academic research identifying ergonomic and manual handling problems, supermarkets are slow to 'improve' the design of Checkstands and enforcers appear reluctant to force improvements to safeguard the safety and health of checkout workers.

These web pages are extracts from an MSc Dissertation entitled "The Identification & Control of Musculoskeletal Risks To Supermarket Checkout Workers" submitted to the University of Salford, Manchester, England, in April 1998 by David Beardmore. Further details of the work are available from the author.
