FS-17B/C Starfighter

The FS-17C class fighters are the current heavy fighter of the USSF, and are FS-17A fighters which have been refitted with a Big Clip Launcher and superior electronics (FS-17B were built in this configuration). There are currently 3 squadrons of 6 FS-17C, organised into the 4th Starfighter Wing of the Space Control Arm of the USSF. All are assigned to the US 1st fleet and based off either the Columbia or various smaller warships.

Hyde is trying to sell their FS-17D/E design, which upgrades the fighter's engine to the latest standards, but is expensive (MLv40 per fighter) , harder to maintain and has little additional combat capability. The USSF has expressed an interest in the F, G, H and I proposals, which change the hull material to the lighter, less stealthy advanced composite (saving 128 tons). The latter of which is designed to be the “best fighter off Terra”, with a 7MW NM plant and Stutterwarp and a projected top speed of warp 5.5. However, the fact that almost 3 of the more prosaic FS-17A-C can be bought for the same price has cooled some heads.

The SCA prefers the G proposal, which is the FS-17B/C with an advanced composite hull. The SCA would also like to dump all their Trilon designed FS-18 (X-2296) light fighters, which are regarded as next to useless.

For basing purposes, the FS-17C is 300 cubic meters.

Units

All SCA units were previously units of the USMC, USAF or USN

21st Space Control Wing

The 21st SCW is an Earth based defence unit containing 18 FS-17A fighters in the standard 3x 6 fighter configuration that is standard SCA practice (based on the French). The unit is part of the Earth Fleet.

30th Space Control Wing

The 30th SCW is based at Tirane, and is a standard 3x 6 fighter squadron unit equipped with FS-17A, it is part of the Earth Fleet.

45th Space Control Wing

The 45th SCW is another odd formation. It is primarily a training unit at Earth, and includes Texans, who do their starfighter training in the US. Another odd feature is an opfor squadron, and a reserve replacement squadron, which is manned by ex-regulars.

1/45th – 4x FS-17A, 2x FS-17C and 2x X-2296 (Training)

2/45th – 4x FS-17A, 6 FS-17B, 2 FS-17C, 8 X-2296 (Reserve and Replacement)

3/45th – 4x FS-17C

50th Space Control Wing

The 50th SCW is assigned to the Ellis Fleet. Far Station 6 (Red Speck) has no SCA presence.

It has the following squadrons:

1/50th – 6x FS-17A (Hermes)

2/50th – 6x FS-17A (Boise Station, Ellis)

3/50th – 6x FS-17A (Far Station 5, Vega)

90th Space Control Wing

The 90th SCW is currently based with the US 1st Fleet and had 17 fighters before Beowulf, in a rather odd configuration. The 1/90th is carried by the Flagship Columbia, the 2/90th has 4 fighters and are carried 2 each by 1st Cruiser Division. The 3/90th is carried by the 5th/8th Division in a similar manner. They have 4 fighters.

Currently the Wing has just 9 fighters, after reinforcements, and the fighters are usually carried by the Columbia, although they are sometimes detached.

91st Space Control Wing

The 91st SCW is based on the American Arm and is part of the King Fleet. It has several squadrons based as follows

1/91st – 6x FS-17A fighters (Luther Station, King)

2/91st – 6x FS-17A fighters (Far Station 3, Broward)

3/91st – 6xFS-17A fighters (Far Station 2, Barnard’s Star)

USMC Fighters Squadrons

There are two USMC squadrons flying the FS-17A fighter, the 4/6th and 4/8th Squadrons of the Marine Interface Wings. Both squadrons contain 6 FS-17A, which are not well liked by the Corps. The need for rocket boosters means their capability for close ground support of Marines in harm's way is limited. The USMC wants to reequip with something better, and is trying to get permission to order the British Wellington class fighter.
