FD COM – TIRANE THEATRE by A. Gubler, Scott Ash and D Hebditch Introduction
Narrative
The role of the sniper is not really the one shot
over two of three kilometers that you see in trivids
about the Foreign Legion super-men in the Junggar
Pendi. It’s not about the one miraculous shot that kills the
evil Manchu General freeing all the pretty French girls from their evil
clutches. No the role of the sniper is about sneaking around on the
battle-field gathering information and then when the time is right striking
as if from no-where at the enemy. This is a brutal, hard and patient
job requiring lots brains and lots of guts. Especially if you’re the
boss of sniper cell, reconnaissance platoon of the 8th Battalion, Parachute
Regiment of Our first big job after we replaced the roughed
up 7-NCR was to take down an ELTA cell that
had got their hands on an Argie point seven
mega joule laser. They were shooting up NCP patrols called out to handle
pre-arranged civil disturbances that seemed to happen every night in
the “Barrio Borracho” or drunk neighbourhood. There had been nine laserings of coppers in the last week of April 2297, two of
them fatal. So I deployed the sniper cell in two patrols covering the
main trouble spots. I took the Avenida We
had a great hide in the roof where we had two directions of fire and
observation through broken tiles, we had the whole area covered and
none of the locals knew what story we were telling. The F57A1 Narara sniper rifle is a Gauss weapon firing
9-mm armour piercing, high explosive; basically the round drills through
armour at up to 1,500 meters per second into the soft flesh and then
detonates 2.5 grams of boom-boom. Well suffice to say it is a pretty
lethal weapon that will kill just about anyone, or at the least blow
your favourite leg off. But on the men streets Nueva Cordoba the Administrators office would have had puppies
if they knew we were using explosive ammunition so we had simple old
jacketed hollow point 9 mils. Good enough for ELTA that was for sure… The
first two days in the “haunted house” as we came to call that stinking
dung heap were spent gathering some pretty good intel
as the ELTA thugs went door to door making sure the locals were up to
date in their dues. As none of them were showing weapons all we could
do was take some real mean images and bide our time. The show got going
on the third day when a small army of NCP squad cars backed by a Kanga
hover APC pulled into the Avenida to pick up an ELTA cell returning to their safe house
from an abortive bank heist. Well all hell broke lose as the young locals
with nothing better to do started hurling rocks and sods onto the coppers,
it was Rumba Latina big time! We
were trying to keep track of all this plus keep our eyes open for the
laser sniper, who was sure to show up and join in the fun, when a group
of Malvinos decided to come and check out our building. We tracked
them moving around on our self-defence motion sensors and our battle
mikes could hear them whispering away in Spanish. They trekked into
the top floor just below our attic and set up in a window right under
my position. I popped my hand-cam out the hole in the roof down towards
them and had a little look-see. There it was, lo and behold, the stubby
muzzle of a Mueller-Rivera Fusile-19 70-01 laser rifle. Well as a sniper
I was also armed with a 4.5-mm Coralsnake PDW and we had plenty of hand grenades and our fighting
knives. The poor Malvinos didn’t know what
hit them with four Aussie paras leaping through the roof in the best
air assault traditions. The three potential snipers were taken down
in quick fashion after a liberal shit kicking. Like I said sniping isn’t
all about that one long shot. From “Non-Lethal Death
From Above: 8-PARA – 2297-99 – Nuevas Malvinas”, by Company Warrant Officer (Sniper)
R. Tom Blake DSM, Fighting Press, 2302 Corps Troops Corps Troops 19th (Regional Force) Division (Reserve) 1st Corps is under the command of
Corps Commandant “Avenging” Annie Cohen and is New Canberra’s main defence
force, and as such is concentrated mainly on the areas of potential,
if unlikely, threat. About half of corps personnel are based in the
Duffer’s Strip area, though corps units and formations can be found
all over New Canberra. The corps is headquartered in ADB
Fort Lara [SE Ab: "Stone"],
the newest defended logistics facility in the ADF, which is located
in the mountains The corps troops comprise several units and formations that fulfil specialist roles for the corps. The specialist units comprise: a deep penetration armoured and drone reconnaissance unit; several engineering units focused towards mountain engineering, construction and general engineering tasks as well as defence against weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, biological and chemical weapons); intelligence, electronic warfare and civil affairs units; and a special forces unit. ESU (“E” Special Unit) is a company sized combat reconnaissance force that can also operate as elite infantry in a raiding and extraction role. It is an open secret that ESU trains in Duffer’s Strip and has declared the five-kilometre stretch on the New Canberra side of the border as their training area. When not manning the checkpoints or patrolling the actual border members of the Australian Border Police (BORPOL) train with ESU honing their skills, something they find appropriate as BORPOL considers itself the elite of the Australian policing services. The corps has a regular allotment of artillery and aviation formations.

Unit 141, Corps of Aviation The Messines Division is based in the troubled Nuevas Malvinas, where its main role is defence with only one brigade engaged in anti-insurrection duties in support of the New Canberra Police. The division headquarters is located in ADB Fort Stanley and operates mainly out of bases removed from the main centres of population. Morale in this division is low, as the instability of the area prevents personnel from visiting the Nuevas Malvinas’ urban areas. While towns near these bases do their best to provide Defenders a chance to let off steam, which is the only economy beyond the base gates. As such, proprietors of a wide variety of entertainments near the bases realise that they can charge whatever the traffic will bear and complaints of inflated prices often reach the local authorities. Additionally, conflicts of other sorts between base personnel and civilians in these towns occur with unfortunate frequency. However, it is recognised that in the event of a major escalation of separatist activity the division will be tasked with the elimination of the separatist forces, while the Brigade and the New Canberra Police restores order. While the thought of battle against countrymen would be disturbing to many in the ADF, some in the division would actually prefer it to, in the words of a Chief Leading Defender stationed there; “Better than hiding from the bastards…”

PSU (“P” Special Unit) is the brigade’s tank movement pathfinders and special intelligence gathering force. Its scattered units, though, may make quick deployment difficult and the biggest supporters of a new spaceport at Port Bagaaybila come from Logistics Command planners in the brigade’s support echelon. Regiment of Australian Artillery 31st (Infantry) Brigade (Reserve) The Killer Kangas Brigade is a reinforced mechanised infantry formation based at ADB Cruz del Sur on the Llano de Tierra Negra. The “Killer Kangas” of the 31st Brigade deserve special mention, as they are the only formation in Tirane Theatre with a mix of part-time and full-time units. Two of the brigade’s infantry battalions are of reserve status and most of the brigades other units have extensive part-time cadres. The brigade has a modified table of organisation and equipment with each infantry battalion replacing one of its rifle companies with an independent armoured company and the brigade has an additional independent tank company (for a total of two) and a independent armoured reconnaissance company. In addition to their defence responsibilities for the sparsely inhabited area between Costa del Oro and Villa Navarro, the 31st acts as FD COM’s opposing forces formation. Their brigade crest consists of a boxing kangaroo firing a shoulder-fired missile and comes from an anecdote related to simulator training problem with American forces before the Twilight War. Some historians believe this story of a computer error causing simulated wildlife to be equipped with missiles to be an urban myth and point to surviving records of a government announcement to that effect. However other historians believe that this statement was an attempt at damage control by the defence establishment. Anyway the “Killer Kangas” are proud of their distinctive and somewhat baffling formation sign. The brigade is of veteran quality and is equipped with Gatto, Crocodile III, Nantawarra and Wallaroo hovercraft and modern infantry equipment.
90th Battery,
Regiment of Australian Artillery 4th Corps is the part-time regular

force tasked with the defence of continental Corps troops comprise a number of independent specialist units and five supporting groups. These units and formations come directly under the command of HQ 4th Corps but are sometimes assigned to other commands as needed. The independent units consist of engineering and electronic warfare assets.

of pride often not realising that other defenders use the name as an
insult, the Carabiniers being far from popular

(Reserve), Regiment of Australian Artillery Australian regional force forces are primarily part-time force responsible for military security and operations at a regional level across Australian sovereign territory. The role of regional force forces is five-fold. Firstly they are to provide local area, behind the lines security against saboteurs or rapid movement assaults such as airborne attacks. Secondly they are to repair damage to lines of communications by enemy deep penetration attacks or natural disaster. Thirdly they offer protection to support forces, supplies and resting troops from enemy attack. Fourthly they provide logistic and administration support to other units operating in their area. Finally they are to stay behind in case their area is overrun to harass an occupying enemy by conducting insurgency warfare. These formations are based in the regions they are expected to defend; though the unlikelihood of that possibility has hampered some recruiting efforts. Each regional force division has a part-time regular mechanised infantry brigade and several militia territorial defence groups. These groups are light brigades of about 2,800 personnel with eight 240 strong territorial defence units (of four light companies and a fire-support section) plus engineering and lines of communications troops. 19th (Regional Force) Division
