You are in the carpark at Reculver Country Park and looking N.N.E. towards the twin towers of St. Mary's Church. The twin towers are a distinctive feature of the North Kent coast and are visible for miles around. In the past, sailors navigating along the Thames estuary used the twin towers as a day-time navigation marker and the first coastal defences were built in front of the towers by Trinity House in 1809. Today, the twin towers are the main remnant of the old church. The area of green to the right of the church contains the remains of a third century Roman fort. |
