You are gradually moving along the cliffs westwards. Photo 'a' shows one of the more resistant layers of sandstone 'sticking out' from the cliff face. Eventually, as the cliff is undercut, these hard layers break off. Photo 'b' shows a small, recent cliff fall. This jumble of soft, sandy rocks will easily be washed away in the next few high tides. Photo 'c' shows the holes made by sand martins which nest in the soft sandstone cliffs in summertime. Such burrowing activity helps to weaken the cliff. The weather plays a part in cliff destruction - here in photo 'd', the effects of rainwater running down the cliff-face can be clearly seen. Small rills have formed in the soft sandstone surface.
