Comments |
Cheesman
created Ensete schweinfurthii as a new combination (number 11 out of 25) in a
brief note in his 1947 paper reviving the genus Ensete. Cheesman revived
one and created 24 new Ensete species in that paper but acknowledged that field
study might reveal synonymy. Baker and Simmonds' 1953 review of the genus Ensete
in Africa radically reduced the number of species either reducing or rejecting most of
Cheesman's African Ensete. Baker
and Simmonds' original paper reduced Ensete schweinfurthii to a synonym of Ensete
edule. However, when it was noticed that, via Musa ventricosa,
Ensete ventricosum took priority over Ensete edule by three years a
substantial correction appeared in the following issue of Kew Bulletin that reduced Ensete
schweinfurthii to a synonym of Ensete ventricosum (please see link
above). The synonymy of this plant is a little complicated. The
original description of Musa schweinfurthii by Schumann was rather poor but
according to Baker & Simmonds 1953 "the large leaf in Herb.
Kew strongly suggests [E. ventricosum]." This is not exactly a
ringing endorsement of the identity of the plant but for the time being it is taken as
adequate. The type species, Musa schweinfurthii was confused with Musa
gilletii De Wildeman by Hutchinson and Dalziel who were apparently misled by comments
of Chevalier. This led to Musa chevalieri wrongly being brought into
synonymy. Hutchinson and Dalziel also listed Musa martretiana and Musa
riperti as synonyms of the type but these names were later rejected as nomen
nudum by Baker & Simmonds.
The
reference by Lock 1993 to E. schweinfurthii (Schweinf.) Cheesman in K. B. 2: 103
(1948) should be changed to Ensete schweinfurthii (K. M. Schumann & O.
Warburg) E. E. Cheesman. Please follow the link to Lock 1993 for more comments about
this item.
