Guiane 2: 931 (1775), nom. rej. as a synonym of Heliconia humilis (Aubl.) Jacq., Pl. Hort. Schoenbr. 1: 23 (1797) and Bihai humilis (Aubl.) Griggs, Bull. Torrey Bot. Musa x humilis G. (G. G.) S. Perrottet, Mem. Soc. Linn. Paris 3: 131 (1825).
Accepted name none - an undetermined cultivated banana or
Musa x paradisiaca L., Species Plantarum : 1043 (1753).
Synonyms Authorities The World Checklist of Monocotyledons gives Musa × humilis Perr., Mém. Soc. Linn. Paris 3: 131 (1825) and Musa x sapientum var. humilis (Perr.) Merr., Enum. Philipp. Fl. Pl. 1(2): 224 (1922) as synonyms of Musa x paradisiaca L., Sp. Pl.: 1043 (1753) which is listed as an accepted name.
Section Distribution Description References Champion 1967 : 40, Hotta 1989, IPNI, Mobot Tropicos, Valmayor et al 2002 : 172. Comments Published as Musa humilis the "x" is added to indicate its presumed hybridity. In this context Musa x paradisiaca is effectively the same as "an undetermined cultivated banana". This should not be read as implying that Musa x humilis is Musa (AAB group) 'French' plantain, Cheesman's identification of Musa x paradisiaca L. (Cheesman 1948). Mobot Tropicos cite the French publication List of Vascular Plants of Gabon with Synonymy (ORSTOM, 1988) as mentioning this plant. Gabon is in West Africa and since there are no wild Musa species in Africa it seems more likely that it is a cultivated form.
In the Philippines, Musa humilis Perr. as listed by Teodoro (Valmayor et al 2002) is taken to mean the local variety Pitogo, an ABB group banana.
In the entries in Champion & Hotta the author's name abbreviated to 'Perrot.' which implies a different author to Perrottet.
