Resettlement of Offenders

The Chief Executive and Editor of T.H.O.M.A.S Father Jim McCartney . meets with Foreign Secretary and Local MP the Rt Hon Jack Straw to discuss the developments of T.H.O.M.A.S.

It has taken T.H.O.M.A.S. five years to build an effective specialist resettlement intervention programme for prisoners. Obviously the T.H.O.M.A.S. programme is not suitable for all, but it is for some. It provides a holistic support to prisoners who have multiple complex problems that are chronically inter-related with their drug and alcohol misuse. This is achieved through an intensive programme of support and accommodation when prisoners are immediately released into the community. It also has a multi agency dimension when people graduate from the scheme. Most importantly it provides a therapeutic basis to construct the re-building of trust, confidence and the manageability of life. Hence contact with the individual within the prison is an essential element of the pre rehabilitation – resettlement process.

In this edition of Edges we read the stories from some of our service users.
