Sola Scriptura: The
Scriptures
"Study [the Scriptures] to show
thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain
babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness" (2 Timothy
2:15-16).
"...the holy Scriptures, which are
able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in
Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect,
thoroughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Timothy 3:15-17).
"Preach the word; be instant in
season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all
longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will
not endure sound doctrine; but ... shall heap to themselves teachers
... and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be
turned unto fables" (2 Timothy 4:2-4).
"For we have not followed cunningly
devised fables ... We have a also a more sure word of prophecy,
whereunto ye do well to take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a
dark place ... Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture
is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old
time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were
moved by the Holy Ghost" (2 Peter 1:16a,19-21).
Sola Gratia, Sola Fide:
Salvation by Works or by Grace Through Faith?
"The just shall live by his faith"
(Habakkuk 2:4b).
"Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John
3:3).
"For God so loved the world, that he
gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should
not perish, but have everlasting life ... He that believeth on
[Jesus] is not condemned:..." (John 3:16,18a).
"[A]s it is written, the just shall
live by faith" (Romans 1:17).
"Even the righteousness of God which
is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe:
... Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that
is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation
through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the
remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
... that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth
in Jesus" (Romans 3:21-26).
"Where is boasting then? It is
excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the
deeds of the law" (Romans 3:27-28)
"For if Abraham were justified by
works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith
the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for
righteousness" (Romans 4:2-3).
"Now to him that worketh is the
reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh
not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is
counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the
blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without
works" (Romans 4:4-6).
"For if they which are of the law be
heirs, faith is made void, and the promise of none effect: Because
the law worketh wrath: ... Therefore it is of faith, that it might
be by grace" (Romans 4:14-16a).
"Therefore being justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. By whom also
we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and
rejoice in hope of the glory of God" (Romans 5:1-2).
"Moreover the law entered, that the
offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more
abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace
reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our
Lord" (Romans 5:20-21).
"For the wages of sin is death; but
the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord"
(Romans 6:23).
"Knowing that a man is not justified
by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we
have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the
faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works
of the law shall no flesh be justified" (Galatians 2:16).
"I do not frustrate the grace of God:
for if righteousness came by the law, then Christ is dead in vain"
(Galatians 2:21).
"O foolish Galatians, who hath
bewitched you that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes
Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works
of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having
begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh"
(Galatians 3:1-3).
"Even as Abraham believed God and it
was accounted to him for righteousness. Know ye therefore that they
which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham ... the
Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through
faith ... So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful
Abraham" (Galatians 3:6-7)
"For as many as are of the works of
the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed us everyone
that continueth not in all things which are written in the books of
the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the
sight of God, it is evident: for The just shall live by faith"
(Galatians 3:10-11).
"But the Scripture hath concluded all
under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given
to them that believe ... Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to
bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after
that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye
are all the children of God by faith in Jesus Christ" (Galatians
3:22-26).
"For by grace are ye saved through
faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of
works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9).
"Not by works of righteousness which
we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing
of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us
abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior; That being justified by
his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal
life" (Titus 3:5-7).
We Are
Saved Unto Good Works, Not By Good Works
"What doth it profit, my brethren,
though a man say he hath faith, and have not works
[that prove his faith is real]?
can [a mere or 'empty'
profession of] faith save
him? ... faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone
[barren].
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy
faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.
Thou believest that there is one God
[an intellectual belief in God's
existence, but refusing God's offer of salvation];
thou doest well: the devils also believe and tremble. But wilt thou
know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? ... as the body
without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also"
(James 2:14-26).
"Let us hold fast the profession of
our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And
let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works"
(Hebrews 10:23-24).
Solus Christus: Christ
Alone
"For the Son man is come to seek and
to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10).
"It is finished" (John 30).
"But God commendeth his love toward
us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much
more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from
wrath through him" (Romans 5:8-9).
"For as by one man's [Adam's]
disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one
[Christ] shall many be made righteous" (Romans 5:19).
"For he hath made him [Christ] to be
sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness
of God in him" (2 Corinthians 5:21).
"[Christ] in whom we have redemption
through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of
the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were
all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth,
visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or
principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for
him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist"
(Colossians 1:14-17).
"And he [Christ] is the head of the
body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead;
that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the
Father that in him should all fullness dwell; and having made peace
through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto
himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth or things in
heaven. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your
mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his
flesh through death, to present you holy and unblamable and
unreprovable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and
settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel"
(Colossians 1:18-22).
"For there is one God, and one
mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself
a ransom for all" (1 Timothy 2:5-6a).
"Seeing then that we have a great
high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God,
... For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the
feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we
are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne
of grace, that we may obtain mercy..." (Hebrews 4:14-16).
"But Christ being come a high priest
of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle,
not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither
by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in
once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of a heifer
sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal
Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience
from dead works to serve the living God?" (Hebrews 9:11-14).
"...Nor yet that he should offer
himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every
year with the blood of others; For then must he often have suffered
since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the
world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the
judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many"
(Hebrews 9:25-28).
"And every priest standeth daily
ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can
never take away sins: But this man [Christ], after he had offered
one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God;
... For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are
sanctified" (Hebrews 10:11-14).
Soli Deo Gloria:
All Glory to God Alone
"Salvation belongeth unto the LORD"
(Psalm 3:8a).
"...that God in all things may be
glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion
forever and ever. Amen" (1 Peter:11b).
"Thou art worthy to take the book,
and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast
redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue,
and people, and nation" (Revelation 5:9).
"Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to
receive power, riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and
glory, and blessing ... Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power,
be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb forever
and ever" (Revelation 5:12-13).
"...Salvation to our God which
sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb" (Revelation 7:10b).
"And he hath on his vesture and on
his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS"
(Revelation 19:16).
The Priesthood of
All Believers
"Ye also, as lively stones, are built
up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual
sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 2:5).
"But ye are a chosen generation, a
royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people..." (1 Peter
2:9a).
"And hath made us kings and priests
unto God and his Father" (Revelation 1:6a).
"And hast made us unto our God kings
and priests:..." (Revelation 5:10a).
Separate From
False Teachings and Practices
"But now I have written unto you not
to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be ... an
idolator ... with such a one no not to eat" (1 Corinthians 5:11).
"Know ye not that ... idolators ....
shall inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).
"And what agreement hath the temple
of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God
hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be
their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from
among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the
unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto
you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty"
(2 Corinthians 6:16-18).
"...another Jesus, whom we have not
preached ... another spirit ... another gospel" (2 Corinthians
11:4).
"...another gospel: Which is not
another; but there be some that ... would pervert the gospel of
Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other
gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him
be accursed" (Galatians 1:6-9).
"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly,
that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving
heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in
hypocrisy; having their consciences seared with a hot iron;
Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats..." (1
Timothy 4:1-3a).
"...there shall be false teachers
among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even
denying the Lord that bought them, ... And through covetousness
shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you" (2 Peter
2:2,3a).
"Whosoever transgresseth and abideth
not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the
doctrine of Christ, he hath the Father and the Son" (2 John 9).
"Come Out of Her,
My People"
"Go ye forth of Babylon..." (Isaiah
48:20a).
"Remove out of the midst of
Babylon..." (Jeremiah 50:8a).
"Flee out of the midst of Babylon,
and deliver every man his soul: ... We would have healed Babylon,
but she is not healed: forsake her..." (Jeremiah 51:1-13).
"And I heard another voice from
heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers
of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues..." (Revelation
18:1-24).
"The just shall
live by faith" (Habakkuk 2:4b, Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11)
"Not by works of
righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy he
saved us,
by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
That being justified by His grace, we should be made heirs according
to the hope of eternal life" (Titus 3:5-7)
"For there is one
God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ;
Who gave Himself a ransom for all" (1 Timothy 2:5-6a)
"...by His own
blood He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained
eternal redemption for us ...
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many ...
we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ
once for all" (Hebrews 9:12b,28a, 10:10b)
"Just as it was
difficult to sense the earliest movements of the Church's
reformation, it is also difficult to mark its closing.
Perhaps a good argument could be made that it has not ended.
For, whenever a Christian discovers that his or her life might not
be as radical or pure as Christ intended,
the trumpet of reform should be sounded - even if it is played only
for that believer.
But, if it is for the church, then to those who have ears let them
hear" [source].
Thus saith the LORD,
Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask
for the old paths, where is the good way,
and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls
(Jeremiah 6:16)
