A
Wounded Spirit
"The spirit of a man will sustain his
infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?" (Proverbs 18:14).
Christ-Centred and Bible-Centred Counselling
Old Testament
"Blessed is the man that walketh not
in the counsel of the ungodly ... But his delight is in the law of
the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he
shall be a like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth
forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and
whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but
are like the chaff which the wind driveth away ,,, For the LORD
knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall
perish" (Psalm 1).
"Every word of God is pure: he is a
shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not
unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar"
(Proverbs 30:5-6).
"Hast thou not known? hast thou not
heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends
of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching
of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that
have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint
and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that
wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up
with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they
shall walk, and not faint" (Isaiah 40:28-31).
"Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the
ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and
walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls" (Jeremiah
6:16).
"Blessed is the man that trusteth in
the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree
planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the
river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be
green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither
shall cease from yielding fruit" (Jeremiah 17:7-8).
"The heart is deceitful above all
things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search
the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his
ways, and according to the fruit of his doings" (Jeremiah 17:9-10).
New Testament
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and
are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you,
and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find
rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light"
(Matthew 11:28-30).
"Then said Jesus unto his disciples,
If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his
cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall
lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it" (Matthew 16:24).
"Therefore being justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also
we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and
rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory
in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And
patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not
ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the
Holy Ghost which is given unto us" (Romans 5:1-5).
"And we know that all things work
together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called
according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).
"Blessed be God, even the Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of all mercies, and the God of all
comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be
able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort
wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God" (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).
"But we all, with open face beholding
as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image
from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2
Corinthians 3:18).
"Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a
fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of
meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye
one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. For if a man
think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth
himself. But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he
have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For every man
shall bear his own burden" (Galatians 6:1-5).
"Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have
always obeyed, ... work out your own salvation with fear and
trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do
of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and
disputings: that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God,
without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among
whom ye shine as lights in the world; holding forth the word of
life" (Philippians 2:12-16a).
"Be careful for nothing; but in every
thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests
be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all
understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ
Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7).
"Finally brethren, whatsoever things
are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just,
whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report;
if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these
things" (Philippians 4:8).
"As ye have therefore received Christ
Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and
stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein
with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy
and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of
the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness
of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head
of all principality and power" (Colossians 2:6-10).
"All scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God
may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Timothy
3:16-17).
"For the word of God is quick, and
powerful, and sharper than any two-edge sword, piercing even to the
dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow,
and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither
is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all
things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have
to do (Hebrews 4:12-13).
"[F]or he hath said, I will never
leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5b).
"According as his divine power hath
given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness,
through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and
virtue" (2 Peter 1:3).
A New Creation
"[E]ven so we also should walk
in newness of life ... Knowing this, that our old man is
crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that
henceforth we should not serve sin ... Likewise, reckon ye also
yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through
Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:4,6,11).
"Therefore if any man be in Christ,
he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things
are made new" (2 Corinthians 5:17).
"I am crucified with Christ:
nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the
life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of
God, who loved me, and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20).
"That ye put off concerning the
former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the
deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that
ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness
and true holiness" (Ephesians 4:22-24).
"Brethren, I count not myself to have
apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which
are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I
press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in
Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:13-14).
Walk Not After the
Flesh
"[W]alk not after the flesh, but
after the Spirit ... For they that are after the flesh [secular
psychology] do mind the things of the flesh; but they that after the
Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is
death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because
the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the
law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in
the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but
in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you ...
Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after
the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but
if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds if the body, ye shall
live" (Romans 8:1-13).
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit,
and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh
lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and
these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the
things that ye ought" (Galatians 5:16-17).
Victims, Talebearing,
Blaming
"And the man said, The woman whom thou
gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And
the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done?
And the woman said, The servant beguiled me and I did eat" (Genesis
3:12-13).
"Honour thy father and thy mother:
that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God
giveth thee" (Exodus 20:12).
"He that covereth a transgression
seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very
friends" (Proverbs 17:9).
"He that is first in his own cause
seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him" (Proverbs
18:17).
"As it is written, There is none
righteous, no, not one ... they are all gone out of the way ...
there is none that doeth good, no, not one ... For all have sinned,
and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:10,12a,c,23).
"Submitting yourselves one to another
in the fear of the Lord. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own
husbands, as unto the Lord. ... Husbands, love your wives, even as
Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it" (Ephesians
5:21-22, 25).
Psychology, Inner
Healing, Recovered Memory Therapy
"Woe to the rebellious children,
saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover
with a covering but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:
That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to
strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in
the shadow of Egypt! Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh
bye your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion"
(Isaiah 30:1-3).
"Woe to them that go down to Egypt
for help ... but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither
seek the LORD!" (Isaiah 31:1).
"Let the wicked forsake his way, and
the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD
... For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my
ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the
earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than
your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:7-9).
"[M]y people have committed two
evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and
hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water"
(Jeremiah 2:13).
"Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the
man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart
departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the
desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the
parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited"
(Jeremiah 17:5-6).
"But Daniel purposed in his heart
that he would not defile himself" (Daniel 1:8a).
"Beware of false prophets, which come
to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns,
or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth
good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A
good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree
bring forth good fruit" (Matthew 7:15-18).
"...not the wisdom of this world, nor
of the princes of this world, that come to naught" (1 Corinthians
2:6b).
"For what man knoweth the things of a
man, save the spirit of man which is in him? ... But the natural man
receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are
foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are
spiritually discerned" (1 Corinthians 2:11a,14).
"For the wisdom of this world is
foolishness with God ... The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise,
that they are vain" (1 Corinthians 3:19-20).
"Beware lest any man spoil you
through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men,
after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ" (Colossians
2:8).
"[K]eep that which is committed to
thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of
science falsely so called; Which some professing have erred
concerning the faith" (1 Timothy 6:20-21).
"But there were false prophets also
among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you,
who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord
that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the
way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness
shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you" (2 Peter
2:1-3).
True Wisdom
"And I, brethren, when I came to you,
came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you
the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything
among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was
with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And
my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's
wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That
your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power
of God" [1 Corinthians 2:1-5).
"Howbeit we speak wisdom among them
that are perfect: yet no the wisdom of this world, nor of the
princes of this world, that come to naught: But we speak the wisdom
of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained
before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of
this world knew: for had they known it, they would not crucified the
Lord of glory. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor
ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things
which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath
revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all
things, yes, the deep things of God" (1 Corinthians 2:6-10).
"For what man knoweth the things of a
man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of
God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have
received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of
God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of
God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's
wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing
spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth
not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto
him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually
discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he
himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of
the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ"
(1 Corinthians 2:11-16).
Thus saith the LORD,
Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask
for the old paths, where is the good way,
and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls
(Jeremiah 6:16)
