Sandy Stewart from The Markinch Wine Gallery presented the following
Italian wines:
Whites
PRAIL SAUVIGNON BLANC 2006 SUDTIROL ALTO ADIGE
This wine comes from a small vineyard tended with the utmost care. The
producer is a co-op, but is so distinguished that it is one of the 'Stars'
of the 'Gambero Rosso', Italy's top wine guide. It is regarded as an ideal
expression of the wine.
PODIUM VERDICCHIO DEI CASTELLI DEI JESI 2005, DOC CLASS. SUP.
Podium is one of the most famous white wines famous in Italy and in many
other European countries. In the most influential Italian wine guide,
the 'Gambero Rosso', it has achieved the top award, 'Three Glasses', five
years in a row. The wine has great elegance, sumptuous fruit with tropical
flavours and hints of almonds and citrus. The balanced finish goes on
and on.
'BROY' BIANCO 2004, DOC COLLIO
This is another 'Three Glass' wine. It is made from a blend of Chardonnay,
Tocai Friulano and Sauvignon Blanc. The wine has creamy, buttery notes,
perhaps due to the high proportion of Chardonnay, round citrus elements
from the Sauvignon Blanc and structure from the Tocai. The fruit is very
ripe, but elegance is once again the overwhelming impression.
Reds
LA SEGRETA 2006, PLANETA, SICILY
The family firm who make this wine are one of only two 'Stars' of the
'Gambero Rosso' in their area. They are known for their progressive practices
and their mixing of local tradition and modern, international techniques.
'LIANO' SANGIOVESE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2002, IGT EMILIA ROMAGNA
Umberto Cesari's devotion to quality is total and has been rewarded many
times in the International Wine Challenge. 'Liano' won another Gold Medal
the 2006 Challenge. This wine, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet, is
an IGT made outside the official system of control as are many distinguished
wines from across the border in Tuscany. It is a wine of intensity and
structure. There is an aroma of ripe fruit, spices and vanilla followed
by dark fruit and an oak influenced finish.
CAPITEL MONTE FONTANA 1999 RECIOTO DELLE VALPOLICELLA DOC
This wine is a sweet version of the dry amarone. It is made with raisonned
grapes of very high
quality which produce a wine of strength and intensity. The Tedeschi family
are very
distinguished makers of amarone and recioto. The rich, natural sweetness
is not overwhelming.
The wine has strong reminders of the fine grapes that made it.
