Tuesday 9th March 2010
Patrick introduced us to an excellent selection of wines from New Zealand.
They were:
Whites
Yealands Estate, Viognier 2008, Marlborough [13.5% ale]
Light, lemony yellow in colour, the 2008 Viognier has layers of peachy,
nectarine perfumes on the nose, with spice and a luscious elegance on
the palate. Great length.
Awards: International Wine & Spirits Competition 2009 - Silver and
Best in Class
Ant Moore, Riesling 2009, Nelson [12%alc]
Citrus, mineral and waxy. Complex layers and a great fruit driven palate.
Tight structure that opens in the glass revealing a full range of classic
Riesling characters of honeysuckle, lemon and long dry clean finish.
Tinpot Hut, Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Marlborough [13% ale]
The wine has lovely depth and intensity and a Sauvignon pungency that
is leavened by an attractive mineral character on both the nose and palate.
Awards: International Wine Challenge Silver 2008 & Sommelier Gold
Medal 2009
Greywacke, Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Marlborough [13.5% ale]
Deliciously aromatic, exuding enticing fruit fragrance with a spicy tomato
twist and the zest of yellow grapefruit. The palate is succulent and tangy
. long and concentrated, finishing with a hint of flinty minerality.
Reds
Tinpot Hut, Syrah 2007, Hawkes Bay [13% ale]
Ruby red in colour with youthful violet highlights. On the nose there
are aromas of white and black pepper, violets and plums together with
subtle hints of spicy chocolate. On the palate, it has plummy, pepper
and cinnamon flavours, with a slight smoky note. Good structure, with
silky, ripe tannins and a warm, ripe finish.
Awards- Sommelier Gold medal 2009 & Decanter World Wine Awards 2009
Silver
Delta, 'Hatters Hill', Pinot Noir 2007, Marlborough 13.5% ale]
Dense ruby in colour this wine has fragrant aromas of cherries and ripe
plums, integrated with floral notes and an underlying layer of toasty
oak. On the palate it is medium bodied with flavours of ripe cherries,
plums and spicy oak. Elegant tannins and well balanced acidity lead on
to a long, richly flavoured finish.
Press- "Matt Thomson is an accomplished winemaker and his Pinot genes
are in place, too. But this wine is the first Delta to recognise his talent
and realise the quality of the dirt in his vineyard. A delicious and thoughtful
wine." Decanter, Matthew Jukes, June 2009
