Roger Sleigh from Eclectic Tastes introduced us to an
eclectic selection of wines from Austria, France and South Africa
Whites
J-C Mandard - Sauvignon de Touraine 2009
Jean-Christophe is the fourth generation of his family to have worked
the vineyards, situated almost exactly halfway between Blois and Tours.
100 % Sauvignon Blanc from vines with average age of 18 years. Harvested
manually for the older parcels and mechanically for the younger vines.
The wine ferments at 18-20oC and is then left in contact with the lees
for several months to optimize complexity. The wine has a grassy, citrusy
nose with good acidity & length
Weingut Schmelz - Tom Riesling Federspiel 2009
Single vineyard wine from the Wösendorfer Kollmutz. The vineyard
has sandy soil and only slight elevation and has excellent air circulation.
Lovely Riesling citrus character, some herbaceousness and a pleasing
mineral character. Lovely crisp acidity. Very easy to drink. Superb
as aperitif or to accompany.
12.5 %, 2.8 g/l Res. Sugar, 5.9 g/l acidity
Weingut Schmelz - Tom Gruener Veltliner Federspiel 2009
From mid-level in the same vineyard as the Riesling this wine won the
Falstaff cup for the best Federspiel level Gruener Veltliner . Very
elegant wine, green apple, some delicate pepperiness.
12.0 %, 1.4 g/l Res. Sugar, 5.8 g/l acidity
Domaine Félines Jourdan - Roussane/Chardonnay 2009
The Domaine is situated close to the Thau lagoon and not far from the
Mediterannean. Low diurnal temperature variations and low rainfall.
A white that tastes of the south of France, floral and citrus on the
nose. Full, soft and round on the palate.
Reds
Weingut Hans & Philipp Grassl - St Laurent 2008
Some debate about the lineage of St Laurent but many believe it to be
closely related to Pinot Noir but it has many characteristics of excellent
Gamay.
12,8 %, 5.3 g/l acid, 1.9 g Res. Sugar
Spicy aromas of sour cherries and elederberries. Elegant and juicy with
lovely structure and ripe firm tannins.
Domaine Félines - Feline Jourdan Grenache/Syrah 2009
A brilliant ruby coloured wine . On the nose there is red fruits, cherry
and some sweet peppers. On the palate the wine is soft and round and
very pleasing. It is low in tannins making it a great, easy-drinking
wine to enjoy on it's own.
Porter Mill Station - Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
13.5 %, 2.6 g/l Res. Sugar, 6.5 g/l Acidity
The Porter Mill Station range represents fantastic value for money.
They are all easy drinking and lack the stalky, green "South African"
character which taints so many of the countries red wines. The Cabernet
Sauvignon offers a super blackcurrant nose together with a generous
whiff of vanilla courtesy of it's time spent in oak barrels. Great with
stews or roasts but equally can be enjoyed for it's own pleasure.
Domaine de la Rectorie - Coté Mer 2005
From the renowned Collioure producer and former literature professor
Marc Parce's Domaine de la Rectorie. This wine is produced predominantly
from Grenache, with some carignan and syrah. Aged in barrique for around
18 months it has a powerful nose, backberry, black cherry, earthy. A
lovely palate, black fruits, minerality and velvety ripe tannins. Powerful
yet elegant.
