A New Birth
with
Richard Bouglet
(l'Art du Vin)
Richard presented the wines listed below, and convinced
us that French winemakers might have been shaken by the success of wines
from the New World, but they were fighting back and producing some excellent
wines.
White
Jonathan Pabiot Pouilly Fumé 2008
This wine displays a natural richness that comes from slow maturation
in cool conditions. It also shows complex notes of grapefruit, gooseberry
and flint with a very pleasant mineral finish.
Domaine Cornin Pouilly Fuissé 'Les Chevrières'
2006
'Les Chevrières' shows lovely concentration, with brioche and
almond flavours.
Red
Domaine Henri Delagrange Pinot Noir Hautes Côtes
de Beaune 2008
A staightforward and honest expression of Pinot Noir. Flourishes of
violet, morello cherry, raspberry and strawberry. Round silky tannins
Haut Médoc Clos du Jaugeyron 2006
This claet has well integrated oak and savoury flavours.
Château Fabas Minervois Cuvée 'Mourral' 2007
Aromatic and rich, showing fine mineral notes and an array of soft spices
and black cherry.
Cabidos Petit Manseng Doux 'Cuvée Comte Philippe'
2005 50cl
This has been described by Isabelle de Nazelle (vineyard owner) as 'Christmas
in a bottle', with powerful quince and tropical fruit aromas. Harvested
later than its sibling wine the Cuvée St Clement, it has higher
sugar content and thus a more controlled alcohol level, making it the
ideal dessert wine. Fresh acidity offsets the sweetness.
