STELLA BLANC DRY MUSCAT 2004, SANTA ISIDRO DE PEGOES, PORTUGAL
This wine comes from a co-operative that has introduced the best modern
techniques. It has an intense, fruity aroma showing the grapey character
of Muscat. The wine is very well balanced with a fine, crisp finish. It
won a Silver Medal at the 2005 Decanter World Wine Awards.
DOMAINE PAUL TALMARD, UCHIZY, MACON VILLAGES 2004
Paul Talmard makes very intense and well-balanced wines. Year after year
his wines stand out for their full, rounded character. The 2004 is very
typical of his style. It is still young and will develop further in the
bottle.
HAMILTON RUSSELL CHARDONNAY 2002, WALKER BAY
Hamilton Russell take their
cue from Burgundy and seek to give it a South African twist. The grapes
are from naturally low yielding vines and great care is taken in the viticulture
and the wine making. The result is a rich Chardonnay that has hints of,
perhaps southern Burgundy.
ST CLAIR WAIRAU RESERVE SAUVIGNON BLANC N.Z., 2005
This is the latest version of a great success story. Made by wine maker Matt Thomson this cuvee has carried all before it in the last few years.
The 2003 won every Gold Medal and Trophy open to it including two Trophies as the Best Sauvignon Blanc in the World. 2005 is a very fine vintage.
It has a full and rich palate with passion fruit, blackcurrant, gooseberry and nettle notes.
Red
DOMAINE DE COLETTE REGNIE 2003, BEAUJOLAIS
The press claimed that 2003 with its very hot summer would be a great vintage. In fact the heat created problems almost everywhere,
but in Beaujolais the wines were lovely - rich, round and beautifully balanced. Year in year out Jacky Gauthier makes lovely wine, but
the 2003 will live long in the memory.
DOGAJOLO 2004, IGT TOSCANA ROSSO, CARPINETO, TUSCANY
This innovative wine is a mixture of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grape types are vinified separately since they
ripen at different times. They are combined towards the end of fermentation and complete their alcoholic and malolactic fermentations
in barriques. The wine is very fruity and intense for early drinking.
PENLEY ESTATE HYLAND SHIRAZ 2002, COONAWARA, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Kym Tolley comes from two, great, Australian wine families, the Tolleys and the Penfolds, which explains the name of his property.
This Shiraz has ripe, berry fruit complimented by restrained use of American oak to produce an elegant, fruit driven wine.
DOMAINE CROS 'LES ASPRES' 1999, MINERVOIS
Pierre Cros is a great winemaker and this is his top wine. Three years
in a row he received a 'Coup de Coeur', the top award in the top French
buying guide, 'The Guide Hachette'. The wine is 100% Syrah, specially
chosen from old vines and aged in new, French oak casks. The result is
rich and beautifully balanced.
