Woman Don’t You Weep - Sam Burke

Sam: This has been around for a while as part of our live set but we never seemed to capture the feel when we recorded it before.

Ferris: I remember trying to record this back in Cumbria in the mid 1990s - having been given the words on a piece of paper at very short notice and not being a singer at the time. Luckily, I’ve had a bit of time now to remember how it goes.

Ruth: A song written some years ago by Sam. Sadly, it is still as relevant today as it was when he wrote it. I just love singing this song. I remember the first time we sang it in public, I had a big lump in my throat and thought I was going to cry.

Ferris - treble recorder, vocals
Ruth - vocals
Sam - vocals

Oh woman, don’t you weep
Your love is gone, but soon returning

So early in the day
The bugles they were sweetly calling
The general he did clearly say
As away the men were marching

Oh woman, don’t you weep
Your love is gone, but soon returning
Oh woman, don’t you weep
Your love is gone, but soon returning

And down there in the bay
The ships they were already boarding
The captain cried out from the quay
And broke the frosty morning

Oh woman, don’t you weep
Your son is gone, but soon returning
Oh woman, don’t you weep
Your son is gone, but soon returning

And later down the King’s Way
The tribute they were unveiling
I heard the politicians say
To those assembled waiting

Oh women, don’t you weep
Your men are gone, they’re not returning
Oh women, don’t you weep
Your men are gone, they’re not returning
Oh women, don’t you weep
Your men are gone, they’re not returning
