The hardest part of the climb was the last half mile which was up a
loose rocky gully that was near vertical and every handhold kept breaking away and
tumbling down the gully right onto those people climbing below you.

But once we got to the top the view was fantastic and
we could look into the top of the volcano and see the lava boiling below us. There was
thick sulphurous smoke pouring out which made breathing hard but we all needed the rest I
can tell you!
