Toy Chest


The toy chest is made from solid beech and veneered panels. The beech normally comes from British managed forests but is sometimes augmented with Scandinavian or American supplies.

The solid frame is of mortise and tenon construction with inlay panels. This provides for strength as well as functional 6mm thick panels to resist splitting.

The marquetry animals are cut from coloured and natural veneers. The top is built up from 18mm panels lipped with hardwood and veneered on both sides.

The inside of the chest is untreated to allow for use as a textile storage box at a later date. The bottom is made from 6mm plywood and removable for cleaning. The surface of the box is waxed for better endurance against knocks etc. The lid is lacquered as a more serviceable surface for wiping liquid spills. The hardwood lipping on the lid also allows for hinges to be fitted should a hinged lid be preferred in later use.
