Think Before You Answer!

Shug Anderson, the band's bassist, whilst recovering from having done his back in, has a go at answering my largely crap questions...

1. You'll have almost finished recording your debut album by now - what's so special about it?

Well, it's now finished, but it's hard to say as I'm close to it all. You'll just have to give it a listen and decide for yourself.

2. Why 'Foil'?

Why not?! We all wanted a name without hidden meanings, so we wouldn't have to explain it.

3. How did you get the ball rolling, so to speak?

It started in the usual band ways, add a bit of practise and a lot of luck and there you have it.

4. Who are your main influences, musical or otherwise?

I can only speak for myself, but musically, punk rock in all its various forms... Crass, The Clash, Fugazi, Big Black, Leatherface, Polvo, Jesus Lizard, The Fall, Sonic Youth and a host of others... and people, Noam Chomsky, Bill Hicks, Primo Levi, Bob Marley, Jello Biafra, in short, *real* people.

5. Who's better than you?

That's a question of taste and can never really be qualified, but take that last list and add many more bands, writers etc. to it.

6. Can you name any up-and-coming bands that deserve a mention?

Sawyer, Chi, Jennifers, Coney Island Cyclone, Moaniac, Griswold... (most of whom can be contacted through Human Condition Records, 120a, West Granton road, Edinburgh, EH5 1PF).

7. What's being in a band all about?

Fun, and dodging having to get a proper job, which can be fun in itself.

8. Do you ever think you've had enough?

Quite often, although it never usually lasts too long before I realise what a cushy number it is!

9. Why should people listen to your music?

For enjoyment and that sense of freedom that only music you like can give you.

10. What sort of people come to see you?

Quite a varied crowd from indie kids to rockers and punks, but thankfully it's now well past the family and friends stage.

11. What annoys you?

All manner of things rational and irrational, like my inability to spell, social conditions worldwide and the lack of success for Celtic F.C. I'm very easily annoyed and could rant for Scotland...

12. What does the future hold for you?

In the short term, our LP is out at the end of September, so more touring and travelling... hopefully we'll start recording new stuff at the end of the year and then who knows.

13. Have I missed any vital questions out?

Q. Colour of pants. A. White with brown stripe.

Q. Fave food. A. Toast.

Q. Fave Spice Girl. A. ?!!!
