From "A chat with Milton Bode" in THE ERA February 2nd 1901

"His early experiences were full of vicissitude and humour. He tells you of the hard times that befell a burlesque company that he managed in Devon. Money was running very short, and the offer of a smacksman to take them from Dawlish to Exmouth in his boat for a sum considerably lower than the raiway fares was eagerly accepted. But the boat was becalmed in the mouth of the Exe, and the expense was eventually ever so much greater than the railway travelling would have entailed."
