incidental learning

Much of the learning we engage in is related to a particular task. We may be conscious of the task, but often not of the learning involved.

However, our orientation is important. Much incidental learning is not purely a matter of good fortune. It, like chance, as Louise Pasteur explained 'favours the prepared mind'.

Often cited examples include the learning involved in parenting, being an active member of a group and in watching television.
