The Sun   6th April 1999

It was in Dominica Mohan's Biz column which reported that 'EASTENDERS star Sid Owen telling a tall story about why his nose looks as thought it belongs to a veteran boxer: "I used to be a street fighter... down at Stringfellows"' he's reported to have said.

WELL WHAT DO YOU EXPECT HIM TO SAY DOMINIC, DA!

Article rating 3/10 Poor Headline seeking crap!

'SUDS LAW' was another relevant headline in The Sun today referring to the career change of Martine McCutcheon. 'How ex EastEnder Martine is running risk of ridicule by joining soap's pop hopefuls.' they go on.

'Soap stars can't resist trying to make it in pop - but why?' they may well ask...   that's it, Sun way to be supportive, run Martine off the road to her original career before it's even started. 'The title of her single - Perfect Moment - hardly sums up soap stars' contribution to rock 'n' roll.

Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Nick Berry shone briefly as did Natalie Imbruglia in 1997, all reaching No. 1, but can anyone recall the pop careers of Neighbours' Stefan Dennis or The Street's Tracey Shaw?   History suggests the best Martine can hope for is a couple of minor hits and a panto career.'  The article continues 'Ally Ross and Collette Walsh chart the sorry story of soap "singers"'

The EastEnder related references were as follows:

'Sophie Lawrence - Love's Unkind 1991, No 21.
Sophie, 'Diane Butcher' , learned the hard way that like love, the pop world is unkind too.

Letitia Dean and Paul Medford - Something Outa Nothing 1986, No. 12
EastEnders, 'Sharon Watts' and 'Kelvin Carpenter' promised us they were gonna make Something Outa Nothing.  Nothing Outa Not very much would have been more accurate.

Barbara Windsor - You've Got A Friend, 1999
Babs has been plugging this album furiously over the last few weeks, but it hasn't yet dented the Top 20.  Don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen.' they say...

Article Rating 6/10.. only as it was interesting despite my views. Do these reporters know that Martine's chosen career was to sing and only took up acting as a stop gap?   Now, the whole world will sit awaiting the downfall of our newest diva...the British are so good at that.. put someone on a pedestal.. then pop.. knock them off again.  Think how lucky these reporters are that they can be a journalist for The Sun one day, and then change career's to presenting some television show without being reminded of their methods of assent.

Quote of the day:  'You can do very little with faith, but you can do nothing without it'.  SAMUEL BUTLER 1902
