"There has been a general decline in membership of most organisations, political and voluntary, in Western Europe.

"There is a rejection of external authority. Individualism and cynicism have led to a rejection of any attempt to provide an over-arching view of life's meaning.

"Fragmentation has led to a sense of not belonging."

A new quest for spirituality..

Research done for the BBC (1995) reports as follows:

There is a general adult audience for religious broadcasting: Half the population watches religious programmes - a quarter at least once a week.
About half the UK population are people of 'vague faith'. They have a nominal affiliation to a religion but have no active attachment to a place of worship. Many, however, value a spiritual perspective on their lives and want religious broadcasting which does not proselytise.
Nearly two thirds of the UK population has a Christian affiliation: Only a fifth of these are active church members.
A quarter of the population see themselves as not at all religious: Only 20,000 belong to humanist or secular organisations.
About 7% are affiliated to faiths other than Christianity.

..but no interest in churchgoing

The Louth Regeneration Survey 1995 ~ a typical secular survey in a small town in Lincolnshire ~ produced this gloomy conclusion to the section on churches:

"The predominant view of those under 40 is that a church is of no importance to them."
