DOVEDALE

For my work's "awayday" in February 2007, my branch went to Dovedale in Derbyshire. Or, to be precise, we visited some animal feed establishments in Derbyshire, had a meeting in a hotel in Ashbourne, and then went for a walk up Dovedale, a wooded limestone ravine which in the geological past was once part of an active coral reef but which, following its uplift, has been eroded to form the landscape we see today, with spectacular arches and pinnacles. It is currently owned by the National Trust -- which meant that, on the day we visited, we couldn't get all the way along it because it had been blocked off for path restoration prior to the start of the spring tourist season. (Poot!) But what we saw made for a very pleasant stroll.
