PARLIAMENT OAK

A sad reminder, not only of this, but also of the multitude of majestic oaks that made Sherwood Forest so special. The ancient forests having reached maturity and by the way of things disappeared. Lowering water table and perhaps the change of lifestyle in the area added to their demise.

Some historians have furthered the legends regarding this tree, although there is no written record contemporary to its time. Occasionally truth is found in the stories told from generation to generation. Further to the King John’s story, historians also suggest that Parliament was held under the boughs of this once mighty oak. Most authorities nowadays accept it probably was planted to commemorate parliament being held by Edward I at the Kings’ Houses in 1290.

We are dealing with a far more civilised society than one would first imagine one of order, place and good management, not only for the then present, but also for its future. As we today plant commemorative trees for the millennium, so did our ancestors. The need for this memorial was as great then, as now.
