VICAR WATER COUNTRY PARK

A PARK FOR THE MILLENNIUM

On the western edge of Sherwood Forest, close to the Nottinghamshire mining village of New Clipstone, Vicar Water Country park opened to the public in 1982 on land reclaimed from spoil tips associated with the local colliery.

Open water, mixed newly planted woodland, a semi-natural deciduous wood, heathland and grassland, together with a network of paths and bridleways, combine to offer a wide variety of recreational opportunities, Fishing, walking, cycling, nature watching, orienteering and picnicking are just some of the activities available to local residents and visitors.

Now thanks to an investment of almost £700,000, the Park is about receive a tremendous boost.

At the heart of the improvement package put together by Newark & Sherwood District Council is a new visitor centre. A vibrant, energy efficient building, the centre will provide shelter, refreshments, exhibitions and an office for the Park Ranger during the day and facilities for community groups in the evening.

The restoration of an area of colliery spoil to heathland, grassland and woodland will double the size of the park, while the removal of an unsightly tunnel will further enhance its appeal.

With the Sustrans Millennium Cycle Route from Dover to Inverness running through it, Vicar Water Country Park is set to become an exciting attraction for the new millennium.
