The Harpur Centre, Bedford

High Street

An interesting example of how Classical motifs persisted, even when the materials were totally inappropriate. The large plate-glass windows - one of them curved - are separated by weedy Greek columns, with an attempt (a poor one) at miniature Ionic capitals. There's even a hint of triglyphs (wrong with Ionic) in the chocolate entablature above them. Why?Did Bedford High Street such an outstanding array of Classical architecture that anything modern would have been felt to clash with the beauty of the existing buildings?
