The Harpur Centre, Bedford

High Street

The last building in the High Street, it may be a relief to know. Actually this is one of the more restrained and pleasant buildings in the street of horror. The 2nd and 3rd storeys are well proportioned, and could have looked quite elegant in a more sympathetic context. I like the way the single pediment over the central window is quietly echoed by the faint pedimental bulge on the roof line.
