I suspect not - maybe palimpsests, as were common on blackboards! The German is I think a paraphrase of Goethe's "Du musst herrschen und gewinnen, Oder dienen und verlieren, Leiden oder triumpheren Amboss oder Hammer sein." (Der Gross-Kophta Act ii) What better image for subject and object? Best wishes Andrew |
