Subject: Found on a school blackboard after a first Latin lesson with a Year 8 group, September 1998
Do the “Ag” and the three “etc.” on the second blackboard have anything to do with the Latin? Also, what are the third and fifth words in German on the last line?
Thanks,
Robert

Dear Robert
I suspect not - maybe palimpsests, as were common on blackboards! The German is I think a paraphrase of Goethe's
"Du musst herrschen und gewinnen,

Oder dienen und verlieren,

Leiden oder triumpheren

Amboss oder Hammer sein."

(Der Gross-Kophta Act ii)
What better image for subject and object?
Best wishes
Andrew
