PLANNERS REPORT
D. Mackett

My main difficulty with planning this event was to make it different from the event I planned in Firestone not very long ago. In particular I didn’t want to send the yellows round the same old paths. After several walks round the copse, I decided to move the start a short distance away from the usual location near the car park and open up some new areas. This was a bit of a risk as several years ago I had come in for a lot of criticism for having a 1Km walk to the start in Parkhurst. On the mainland 2 to 3 Km walks and even bus journeys are not uncommon.

After planning courses on paper and then more walks in the copse an event began to emerge using very few of my previous control features and making the yellow and orange a bit more challenging. I also wanted to make full use of the areas east of the road for the light green and blue courses.

Heavy rain in the days leading up to the event made all areas very muddy with the yellow course particularly muddy. On the day it started dull and drizzly but gradually improved and a good number of competitors braved the mud.

Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves and there were very few problems. The orange course turned out to be too difficult, more of a very light green, and I will bear this in mind next time. I apologise to competitors on the light green and blue courses for mixing up two of the controls.

Many thanks to Sarah Fish and Dominic for helping to put out controls, to Ian Ralph for manning the finish and collecting in the controls, to Chris Lipscome and her map sales and string teams and to all those who helped to run this event.
