J W Campbell

(1910-1971) US science fiction writer and editor, Analog. He took a degree in physics in 1932 from MIT and Duke University. JWC loved SF and SF magazines from their inception selling his first stories to them whilst still in his teens. His first story "Invaders from the Infinite" sold to Amazing Stories; however, editor, T. O'Conor Sloane, lost the manuscript, so it was his second sale, "When the Atoms Failed" (1930), that became his first published story.
