Menu options are provided for joining new games.

LAN

If you are running on a LAN (Local Area Network) through Windows 95 then use IPX networking! I think it's possible to use TCP/IP too but not having tried it I'm not sure!

Playing 'Brutal' Mod
Good Quake mod. (Designed for death match and allows traps to be set which look like items the you would normally pick-up!)

If you are using a modified game like 'brutal' you don't need to have a copy on each of the user's machines.

Playing 'CTF' (Capture the Flag) Mod
Very popular Quake mod. (Designed for multi-player team games)

If you want to play CTF (Capture the Flag) then you will need a copy on each machine and you will have to run it like this:

'q95.bat -game ctf' (from the command prompt or windows shortcut.)

Don't forget to put the ctf files in the directory:

'<path to quake>\quake\ctf'

The CTF files are on a on-line CDROM it's quite a large file! Even when compressed! Otherwise I would have put them on my web space! Link to on-line CDROM (Quake Archive)
