At the 1950 Earls Court Motor Show, London the Triumph Mayflower convertible / ragtop made its world debut.
Sir John Black, having instructed the Standard Triumph Experimental Shop to create a Coupe by cutting the roof off experimental body X496 and a Drophead Coupe from experimental body X500, repeated the same instruction to Mulliners who duly complied. However, the large amount of work involved in production was the downfall of both models as the time and cost of the work to cut and strengthen the saloon bodies sealed their fate at the end of a 'production run' of just 10 Coupes and one Drophead Coupe (Roadster?). A total of just thirteen 'rag top' Mayflowers have graced the roads of the world - unless you know different?
There is a photo of one of the Drophead Coupes (Roadster?) in the archive at the Motor Heritage Centre at Gayden with Sir John stood proudly next to it. It has detachable canvas (?) side screens in place of the fixed rear quarters which formed part of the canvas (?) roof. Press-studs held the screens in place, which could be removed when the roof was up for the Roadster effect. I do not believe there were any other differences to the Coupe - as far as I could tell from the photographs.
The 'rag top' Mayflowers were marketed collectively as the Drophead Coupe.
The Coupes and Drophead Coupes were the only Mayflowers (other than the prototypes) to have ashtrays (pull down type in each door) and door pockets (elastic edged leather below the door arm rests).
With its enormous roof, blind rear quarters, landau bars and dramatic 'twist' when driven it is doubtful that had production been economical that it would have sold in any numbers. I have spoken to a gentleman who drove a Coupe and he stated that "The twist and movement in the body was quite alarming, if not a little challenging. But it was good fun." He drove this Coupe in the early sixties and unfortunately doesn't know what happened to it.
Since I launched this site three gentlemen have contacted me, each of whom claim to have an original Coupe. One car was known to me being a "just for fun" 1990's conversion by a TMC member, (
So little is known about the Drophead Coupes that I can't elaborate further - other than speculation. Do you know of anything? Please let me know!
If you have any photographs, advertisements, magazines etc. relating to or containing the Triumph Mayflower Drophead Coupes and you are prepared to share them with the Triumph Mayflower Club and myself please contact me. Thank you.

Emma - now sadly off the road due to 'structural / body problems'.
Commission / registration numbers etc.
The Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Agency UK (DVLA) have advised me that there are no Mayflower Coupes on their books which suggests that they have all been broken up. However, there is also the possibility that they are lying forgotten about in a garage or barn. The registration numbers given to the UK registered Coupes have not been re-isued to any other vehicle and are listed below. Good hunting!

TT10335E (LRW 42) was registered as 1200T D/H Coupe as was TT442CP (KRW 28). There was also an unregistered car TT174 T4 - 'T' for Tourer? It is open to debate that three Roadsters were built.

Back to contentsI believe this may be the first Drophead Coupe. Note how low she is at the rear - no engine? She may be KWK 656 or LRW 42 straight from the Experimental Shop, or the first delivery to Triumph from Mulliners The photograph (like all the other photographs) was taken on a sports playing field!

The Mayflower Coupe was somewhat overshadowed by the Triumph Roadster Back to contentsKRW 417 was registered on the second of February 1951 and was the second to last Drophead Coupe to be manufactured. Her body number is TT3424CP and her engine number TT3435E.
Note how the doors have sagged over time. The cost of strengthening the decapitated saloon bodyshell was the demise of this model - and it clearly didn't work!!

"To cater for those who enjoy open air motoring and yet require the adequate weather protection provided by a closed car, this Drop Head Coupe is available. It has all the equipment provided by the saloon including winding side windows which form side screens when the hood is lowered, thus forming a most attractive dual purpose car".

'This illustration shows the coupe head folded down (an operation easily carried out by one person) and the generous seating arrangements. The roomy rear seat is fitted with side armrests. The wide doors and divided bench type front seats tilted and folded forward make entrance to the rear very easy. The side windows of Triplex Safety Glass can remain up to form neat and efficient side screens with the centrally hinged ventilating flaps at the front edge, or can be lowered by winder. There is ample luggage accommodation in the extensive rear luggage boot.'
'The facia, finished in colour to match the body, and the polished black instrument panel are in good taste. A three spoked steering wheel allows increased visibility and has the horn and trafficator control in the centre. The three speed gear change lever on the steering wheel column, and the parcel shelves will be noted. Radio and heater as illustrated can be fitted as optional extras. De-mister vents are incorporated for use when heater is fitted.'
Back to contents'This very attractive alternative to the now well known Triumph Mayflower Saloon is designed to meet the needs of the motorist who prefers open air motoring when conditions permit, yet who naturally requires the comfort and weather protection of a saloon. It retains characteristic lines and fittings of the saloon, yet in a manner of seconds can be converted into a completely open tourer.'

'When the folding head is up ventilation is well provided by the wide wind up door windows and the centrally hinged ventilator flaps. Arm rests and door pockets are also useful features.'
The brief specification is as per the saloon and features elsewhere on this site.
