WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?

"OK, you and Teal'c do the survey and I'll stay here with Daniel while he reads these rocks."

Daniel looked up from the inscription he was studying and frowned.
"Jack, its a nice day. There's no indigenous population, no large predators. Can't you just sit down and relax?"

Sam grinned at this exchange. She finished securing her backpack and turned to the Jaffa by her side. "Ready?"
"Of course, Captain Carter."
Teal'c inclined his head towards O'Neill and Jackson. "Farewell. We will return by nightfall."

Sam and Teal'c set off down the riverbank leaving Jack and Daniel at the ruins.
"You could have gone too. I don't need a baby-sitter."
Jack looked glum. "You know the regulations - no-one gets left on their own."
He sat down in the shade of a wall, pulled his baseball cap down over his eyes and let out a deep sigh. Daniel rolled his eyes, it was going to be a long day.

The river was in spate, rushing over rocks and swirling up the bank. The water frothed and churned as Sam and Teal'c made their way steadily along. Carter occasionally stopped to take a sample of the vegetation or watch a native bird. After a couple of hours, they sat down for a rest and something to eat.

"Captain Carter, are we going to follow the river for the whole mission?"
"Yes, its easier. Less likelihood of us getting lost."
"I see." He continued quietly eating.
Sam was beginning to wonder if she should have asked the Colonel along instead, at least the conversation would have been livelier. After their meal they continued downstream, picking their way along the riverbank which in places was awash. Carter's attention was drawn by a brightly coloured bird perched high in a tree. Stopping to try and get a better look she lost her footing. Flailing her arms wildly she slipped towards the rushing water. Teal'c tried to grab her and fell into the river himself with a tremendous splash.

"So what does that say again?" Jack leaned over Daniel's shoulder and pointed at the inscription.
"Jack, just go for a walk will you? I'll be fine, you're driving me mad!"
Colonel O'Neill seemed rather hurt and stood up. "OK, I'll have a stroll by the river, just like Carter and Teal'c. Boy, did they get the good assignment today."
Daniel let out a breath and got back to his work. At least now he might be able to concentrate.

The water was cold and sucked Sam along at a furious pace. She managed to gulp some air as she came to the surface, only to be pulled under again by the fierce current. Concentrating on her own survival, she was initially unaware of Teal'c grabbing her arm. Then she felt a powerful tug and she was hauled out of the water to lie coughing on the riverbank.

"Captain Carter, are you well?" The Jaffa's dripping face was a picture of concern.
"Yes, thanks Teal'c. Did you fall in as well?"
He nodded solemnly. "I did, but I found it possible to extricate myself and then you."
"Perhaps we ought to head back to the Colonel and Daniel."
"I think that would be wise."
Teal'c helped Sam to her feet and they turned back towards their base.

"How far downstream were we swept, Teal'c?"
"Several hundred meters, I believe, Captain."
The vegetation along the riverbank was becoming more and more dense. Several large bushes with vicious looking thorns barred their way.
"Can we get round them?" asked Sam.

Teal'c walked a little way away from the river, then returned. He shook his head.
"Either we go through the undergrowth or we try and make our way in the river. I think we should stay on land, Captain."
Sam glanced at the raging torrent then took a close look at the thorns, experimentally prodding one with her finger. She winced.
"We could try cutting it back with our knives," she said hopefully.

Daniel looked up as Jack returned to the ruins. He smiled as he noticed the bunch of gaudy local flowers that the Colonel was carrying.
"For me, Jack? I didn't know you cared."
"Very funny. I.... er.... well.... they were just asking to be picked." There was an embarrassed pause. "I thought Carter might like them."
The archaeologist's eyebrows shot up.
"OK, bad idea. Perhaps I'll give them to Teal'c."
Daniel laughed and took a closer look.
"They are very bright, you don't see many green flowers on Earth. I wonder what sort of unusual vegetation Sam and Teal'c have found?"

Teal'c led the way through the dense undergrowth trying to hack it away with his knife. Following him, Sam did the same but they were both getting badly scratched and their normally tough military clothing was torn. They emerged from the thicket and studied each other. Their clothing was muddy, ripped and covered in blood from the multitude of cuts they had suffered.

Sam spoke, "OK, it can't be far back to where we fell into the river. It'll be plain sailing from there."
Teal'c looked puzzled. "I thought we were remaining on land, Captain Carter."
Sam groaned, she just didn't have the energy to explain. "Figure of speech."

As they walked on in silence, Sam was wishing she was back at SGC. A hot bath, clean clothes and something soothing on the scratches would be nice. Teal'c suddenly stopped and swung round, listening.
"What?" she asked.
"I believe we are being followed."
Sam joined him in scanning the forest. "I can't see...." A loud rustling noise stopped her in mid-sentence. The waist-high plants on the forest floor were moving as if they were being pushed out of the way. Mesmerised by the swaying foliage, Sam didn't see the animals straight away. Dozens of dog-like creatures were heading for them. Even at a distance, it was obvious they had long sharp teeth.

"Teal'c does your weapon still work?"
"No, I am afraid it was submerged and will need maintenance."
Sam spun round, trying to work out which way to run and realised that the creatures were coming from all directions except the river. She glanced up at the nearest large tree.
"Come on, up here. Let's hope they can't climb trees."

Jack had returned to his position by the wall, and had nodded off in the sunshine. Daniel was on his hands and knees engrossed in his work when a small noise made him look up. He found himself about two feet from an animal similar to a rabbit but with short ears and longer fur. It sat up on its hind legs and put its head on one side, studying him with enormous brown eyes.

He tried to attract Jack's attention. "Pssst! Jack!" he whispered.
The Colonel stirred and stretched, then saw the scientist virtually nose to nose with what was possibly the cutest creature he had ever seen.
"Wow, Danny. Its so.... Hey, look there's more." He pointed to his right where three more of the animals were sitting watching them.
"Do you think Sam and Teal'c have seen any of these?" Daniel asked as he slowly reached for the camera.

"I think they have given up, Captain Carter," observed Teal'c as he peered down from the tree.
Sam cautiously leaned over and carefully scanned their surroundings.
"I agree, they seem to have gone. OK, lets get down."
Teal'c climbed down first, with surprising agility for a man his size. Carter began to follow him but about halfway down her tired muscles betrayed her and she lost her grip, plummeting the remaining ten feet to the ground.

"Ooooh!"
"Captain Carter?"
Sam gingerly tried to stand. "Ow! I've sprained my ankle."
"Do you wish me to carry you?"
Balancing on one leg, Sam shook her head. "No, thanks. Its not far back now, I'll manage."

They made their way slowly back to the ruins, tired, dispirited and just wanting to get back to SGC. As they approached they could hear Jack's voice.
"You know Daniel, when you think of the river, the plant life and those animals, I've got to say that this place is terrific. Do you think Carter and Teal'c would like to stretch the survey out to two days?"
Sam's eyes narrowed, nothing was going to get between her and a hot bath.

"Colonel?" she shouted.
Daniel and Jack both turned to face their team-mates and took in the torn clothing, the blood, the dirt and Sam's obviously injured ankle. Their mouths dropped open.

Then Jack asked innocently, "What happened to you?"
