Phillips Motorised Bicycle - Spares

by Jim Lee

I am now well in to restoring my 1955 Rex-powered Phillips Motorised Bicycle and have discovered that some Puch Maxi 50cc parts can be used on the Rex engine and, in fact, are quite interchangeable.

Puch exhaust flange gasket No.050-1615 is completely interchangeable with the one fitted to the Rex engine.  The Pallas carburettor fitted to the Rex engine has a vertical union onto which the fuel pipe fits and, being poor quality base metal, easily breaks, as mine did whilst restoring the carb.  This part can be replaced using the following Bing carb parts as used on Puchs: banjo (hose swivel connector) part No.320-1-15-038-1 and fixing screw part No.320-1-15-039-1 which can be used with the top hat shaped fuel filter sieve part No.362-1-15-037-2.  All these parts fit perfectly and with no need for any modification. The circular float bowl gasket can also be replaced with the Puch/Bing part No.362-1-15-028-1.

The 6201 main bearings used in the Rex engine are slightly narrower than the normal 6201 600-series metric bearing but these can easily be adapted to fit the Rex engine by grinding them down on a surface grinding machine.  After this they should be cleaned carefully to remove all traces of swarf before fitting.

Mudguards and stays for the Phillips Motorised Bicycle are available from W.R.Pashley Ltd, Masons Road, Stratford-on-Avon, CV37 9NL and are those fitted to various of their carrier bicycles, which are still in production.  The wire mudguard stays are, in fact, identical to those used on the Phillips; the mudguards are the correct section, they come complete with brackets and, apart from a little swaging, can be made to fit the Phillips easily.  Pashley is also worth a try for other cycle fittings as they may well be able to supply other parts for those of us restoring early mopeds, etc.
