British Salmson Cyclaid

by Derek Langdon

In the course of working on an engine I have accumulated some information that might be of help to other owners.  The bearings and seals are all metric and readily available.  The crankshaft runs in three bearings, these are: 2 off number 16004 and one off 16002.  The pulley shaft runs in two bearings, both 16002.  The big-end rollers are 3mm × 5mm and eighteen are required.  The thrust washers that fit on the crank pin on either side of the big-end are hardened steel about 30 thou thick (or 0.75mm if your feeling continental).  These thrust washers should be a four-pointed star shape on the outside diameter so that oil mist can reach the big-end rollers.  End float on the pulley shaft should be around 4 thou and the easiest way of adjusting this is by fitting an ordinary ¼" mild steel washer behind the head of the thrust button, but take care not to overdo things and thereby end load the pulley shaft and its bearings.  The two oil seals are also readily available, measuring 14mm × 24mm × 7mm.
