Copdock Show - 5 October 2003- Best Club Stand

Neil Morley

Mark Daniels, ably assisted by Andrew Pattle, David Evans and myself organised a NACC club stand at the Copdock Classic Bike Show, Suffolk Show Ground, Ipswich, on Sunday 5th October.  This was the first time that we had participated in this annual event on this site, organised by the Copdock Classic Motorcycle Club.  What were we to expect?

Members from Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk sections contributed to make the stand an Anglian team effort, with some fifteen machines featured on our display.  Among our exhibits, two rare machines produced locally in Ipswich gave a considerable promotional advantage; an Ostler Mini Auto Cyclemotor dating from the early 1950s, and a Stella Minibike dating from 1962.  Other exhibits included the Elswick Hopper Lynx, Bown & Francis Barnett autocycles, Ariel 3, Phillips Panda, Raleigh Wisp, Phillips Gadabout Mk4, NSU Quickly & Zündapp Falconette.  We were also the only stand to feature a diesel-powered machine in the form of a Lohmann Cyclemotor.  A Cymota display engine and two computer-driven slideshows added to the overall effect, helping draw more crowds to the stand.

The distinctive exhaust note of a Mercury Mercette turned the heads of a number of nearby Harley Davidson riders dressed in full Western attire.  They simply couldn't believe a moped could sound like that!

During the afternoon, and quite unexpectedly, we were presented with a rosette for the "Best Club Stand".  Later on during the awards ceremony, Mark Daniels accepted the accompanying trophy on behalf of the Club.  The judges had "appreciated the wide range of exhibits and informative displays that accompanied them".  Receiving the award has been a great honour, let's have more of the same next year!
