Tony Wynn

After suffering for many months from illness, Tony passed away at home on 18th June 1996.  I attended his funeral on Monday 1st July.  The church was absolutely packed and it was a very moving service, being a celebration of his life, not his passing away.  I can only say that if I ever found myself with a terminal illness like Tony did, that I would hope to have the courage, strength and dignity that Tony fought his illness with.  Earlier this year when Tony had had a stroke, which was the first warning that his illness had returned, I went to visit him.  I found him weak but ever cheerful.  He told me bluntly "I've had it mate, it's only a matter of time now".  The stroke was found to be caused by a brain tumour.  After treatment he seemed to be improving well, putting on weight but losing his hair.  Suddenly he collapsed again and more tumours were found, these ultimately resulting in his early death.  Born a Yorkshireman, Tony possessed a good sense of humour and he kept this to the very end.  I think his interest in cyclemotoring was only surpassed by his love of Yorkshire's favourite game: cricket.  Tony put an enormous amount of work and energy into the club's Spares Service after he took it over.  He had hoped to expand the service but his illness prevented this.  I doubt that anyone can be found who will ever be more willing and helpful to provide a spares service to members as he did.
