(Friendly) v. Bristol Junior League 19 April 2002 Ko 7:30 Bishop Sutton
Two second half goals from debutant striker Ben Crewe was enough to settle a game in which Avon produced a solid display to defeat their Saturday counterparts from the Bristol Junior League, (BJL). The first half passed with both sides guilty of missing good chances, and the Avon attack being frustrated by the off-side trap used by the BJL. It seemed only a matter of time before the clever movement of Ben Crewe and Rhys Morgan at the head of the Avon attack would find an opening. In the second half the strong running from mid-field of Ben Garland allied with the incisive passing of Blaine Mitchell and Jack Gooding continually opened the BJL defence, only to be met by an in form keeper who did all he could in making several outstanding saves to keep his team on level terms. Mid way through the half a probing run by another debutant, Ashley Bullock was brought to an abrupt end when he was up-ended in the box. Ben Crewe calmly stroked home the penalty to put Avon in front. The Avon defence of Gooding, Pickford, Bowker and Lerway dealt comfortably with the change in formation of the BJL, and it was their good defending and clever passing that set up the Avon counter attacks. Ten minutes from time another mazy run and cross by Bullock found Crewe in the 6 yard box, he controlled and volleyed to give his team a comfortable 2-0 victory. Ryan Perry in the Avon goal handled well but was hardly troubled, Tom Kempster playing out of position worked hard but injury meant he had to make way for Marcus Smith who made several probing runs and crossed well from the left.
Representative Squad : Ryan Perry, Jack Gooding, James Lerway, Blaine Mitchell, Marcus Smith (all Bitton AFC) Andy Pickford, Tom Kempster, Nick Bowker (all Avon Ath), Ben Crewe, Ashley Bullock (Bamfield) Ben Garland (Whitchurch) Rhys Morgan (Pucklechurch) Avon Youth u16 Representative Team v. Cirencester youth 18 Oct 01 @ Keynsham Town 7:30 The Avon Youth League u16 Representative Team came out on top with a 3-0 defeat of Cirencester Youth in their opening game of the Gloucestershire Inter-League Competition. Ricardo Kerr (Ingleside) netted the first after 20 minutes and was quickly followed onto the score-sheet by Rhys Morgan (Pucklechurch) to put Avon in the driving seat at half time. The game was wrapped up mid-way through the second half when Cirencester pused forward and Lewis Ridd broke through to chipped the stranded keeper to cap an all action performance. The win was based on a solid performance by the back four of Nick Bowker and Andy Pickford (Avon Ath), Steven Bacon (Whitchurch) and Jack Hodder (Bitton). In goal Ryan Perry (Bitton) was rarely tested. The side was prompted from the middle of the field by the tough tackling and excellent distribution of Blaine Mitchell (Bitton) and Mark Hughes (St Nicholas). The pace and work-rate of Leon Maloney and Ricardo Kerr (both Ingleside) out wide was always a threat and ensured forwards and full-backs had good support. Lewis Ridd (BRSC) and Rhys Morgan (Pucklechurch) provided the cutting up front with pace and clever movement. Marcus Duharty, Jack Gooding (both Bitton) and Ben Garland (Whitchurch) proved able replacements when they came on. Richard Marsh (BRSC) was the unused replacement ‘keeper.
