A simple picture depicting what used to be the daily scene off the Norfolk coast - pre-war steam trawlers setting out into the North Sea from the port of Lowestoft. The loss rate of these tiny boats was enormous. All-steel construction, with practically no buoyancy, made this type of fishing a most hazardous occupation. I doubt whether the regular consumers of lunchtime fish and chips ever gave much thought as to how dangerous it had been for someone to secure this particular delicacy for them. Fish may be free, but the sea does not give them up easily.
