We
were met at the airport in Perth by Alex, a friend from University
in Scotland, along with two of his Aussie mates, Ric and Mike.
They gave us a lift south to Margaret River, where we all
stayed with Alex and his family in a holiday home in
Gracetown for a week. Gracetown is about 20 kms outside Margaret
River. The Margaret River area is beautiful. It's really rugged,
and outside the small towns it's almost exactly what you would
expect the Aussie brush to look like. It's pretty rural, unlike
the east coast of Australia, and offers beautiful scenery,
great, powerful waves for surfing, and a slow, country pace
of life.
Whilst
staying in the holiday house in Gracetown with Alex's fmaily,
we had the joy of choosing which one of loads of superb surfing
spots that we would surf each day. Mostly we surfed a break
called Karate's, but we also had a couple of sessions at the
fantastic North Point. After
a week of luxury with Alex's family, we spent two weeks in
Prevelly Campsite, just next to Margaret River Main Break.
Although it was hot, dry and dusty at Prevelly, we enjoyed
some fun surfing at Margaret River Main Break, and also at
Margaret Rivermouth. Prevelly's a great place to go to meet
people when you're travelling. We made loads of good friends
at Prevelly, and had many a drunken night around our barbie.
We
did quite a lot of hitchhiking around the region while we
were there, going as far as Augusta, along the Caves Road,
and up to Yallingup. Yallingup is a beautiful town on the
coast. If you're not a surfer but love the beach, make sure
that you take a day or two to go and chill out on the beautiful
white sands.
After
surfing the powerful waves of Margaret River, we went north
again to Perth, where we stayed with Slater, Theressa and
Christy while trying unsuccessfully to get jobs. Perth's got
an excellent night life, the city centre is absolutely packed
with pubs and clubs and beautiful people. We went out nearly
every night, and although we had a great time, spent far too
much money. After 2 weeks of small, closeout waves, and no
luck job hunting, we left Perth and caught a plane to Sydney
to see what Australia's east coast was like.
